- North Medford's Johnny King races toward third base during Game 1 against Bend in Medford Saturday.
North Medford starting pitchers Trey Newmann and Frankie Rutigliano were in a steady groove Saturday and battery-mate Jeremiah Robbins did his job to help each of them out on the offensive end as the Black Tornado opened the season in strong fashion.
Newmann and Rutigliano each shut down visiting Bend in their parts of Saturday’s doubleheader and Robbins wrapped up his day by going 5-5 with three doubles, a triple and three RBIs as North Medford swept the Lava Bears, 6-1 and 8-0.
Bend entered the twin bill ranked No. 6 in the Class 5A coaches poll but could never quite find a rhythm against Newmann and Rutigliano, who allowed a combined eight hits in 12 innings of work.
Aiden Horsley came on in relief of Rutigliano in Game 2 to preserve the shutout, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and two walks in two innings.
Robbins got North Medford off to a fast start in the opener, ripping a double off the fence to plate Horsley in the bottom of the first inning.
The Black Tornado (2-0) lead ballooned to 5-0 in the second inning with an outburst that included RBI efforts by Horsley, Johnny King and Robbins.
That early offense proved more than enough for Newmann, who struck out 13 and didn’t walk a batter.
Bend managed five hits against the senior right-hander, and its lone run came in the seventh inning after a wild pitch with two outs allowed Kaden Isola to score.
In Game 2, Rutigliano struck out seven with two walks and three hits allowed in five innings.
Robbins, again, sparked North with an RBI double in the first inning to set the tone for a 3-for-3 outing.
The Black Tornado tacked on two more runs in the third inning after a triple by Robbins was followed up by a double from Rutigliano and sacrifice fly by Kellen Willer.
In the fourth inning, North Medford broke the game open with four more runs after Easton Curtis, King and Robbins all walked to create a revolving door toward the plate that was capped by an RBI single from Newmann.
Isola went 2-for-3 for the Lava Bears (0-3) in Game 1.
