PREP RUP: North Medford nets 4th straight win

After some tough luck during the North Medford Spring Break Invitational and a conference-opening sweep at the hands of the No. 1 softball team in the state, the Black Tornado found itself in an unfamiliar situation with a five-game losing streak.

Whatever bad vibes that may have created has gone by the wayside during the past week, however, and North Medford continued to surge Thursday with a 13-1 victory over South Eugene in Southwest Conference play.

The Black Tornado (8-6, 4-2 SWC) has now won four straight games leading into Monday’s doubleheader at South Medford, outscoring its opponents 43-7 over that span.

Junior pitcher Gabbi Urban limited the Axe (4-9, 1-6) to three hits Thursday, striking out 12 with three walks in a game played at Sheldon High.

Offensively, the Black Tornado broke out the bats to finish with 16 hits and used four-run outbursts in the third and fourth innings to break away for good from South Eugene.

Alexis Wadley got things going in the third with an RBI single, which was followed by an RBI triple from Rhyan Hamlin and run-scoring double by Samara Miles. Urban later added an RBI single.

Wadley again started the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single, with Urban capping the scoring surge on a two-run single.

Presley Lawton connected for a two-run double in the seventh inning and finished with three RBIs overall, while Urban was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Miles went 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.

Hamlin posted a 2-for-4 effort with four runs and two RBIs, while Natalie Tlascala and Kaida DeHaven each added two hits for the Black Tornado.
