- Former Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury died Friday at 73.
Former Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, 73, died Friday.
Bradbury and his wife, Katy Eymann, were on a six-month cruise around the world when he experienced unexpected medical complications, according to a statement from the family, which was first reported by KATU.
Bradbury was the Oregon secretary of state from 1999 to 2009. In 2010 he ran for governor but lost in the Democratic primary to Gov. John Kitzhaber. Before that Bradbury served in the Oregon Legislature and was the state Senate president.
Bradbury was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1981. When he ran for governor he used a Segway scooter to get around and put his MS front and center in a witty advertising campaign.
Sen. Ron Wyden reacted to Bradbury’s death on Twitter Friday night, saying, “My friend Bill Bradbury combined smarts & decency to exemplify the best of what it means to be a public servant always working to make his beloved Oregon an even better place for everybody to live and work.”
