PREP SB: No. 4 Panthers prove versatility in sweep

Whether by domination or determination, South Medford’s softball team showed Friday that it has what it takes to deserve a No. 4 ranking in the Class 6A coaches poll.

Sydney Boren set the tone in Game 1 of a Southwest Conference doubleheader at Roseburg with a three-run home run in the first inning of an eventual 8-0 victory.

In Game 2, however, the Panthers had to pull together after the Indians scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Undaunted, South Medford sent seven batters to the plate in the top of the eighth to score three tiebreaking runs en route to a 6-3 victory.

With the sweep, the Panthers ran their record to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in SWC play heading into Monday’s twin bill against North Medford at South Medford High.

Junior Nicole Ledendecker earned both pitching victories, scattering four hits with eight strikeouts and only one walk in the opening shutout.

In Game 2, Ledendecker came on in relief of Kaycee Hudson in the fourth inning and allowed three hits and one earned run with three walks and three strikeouts. She was the pitcher of record when South Medford broke the tie in the top of the eighth, and sophomore Jordan Knutson closed the door with a scoreless final frame.

To secure the sweep, June Woster singled to lead off the top of the eighth before Ledendecker grounded into a fielder’s choice. After advancing on a passed ball, Ledendecker was able to score from second base on a Roseburg error on a ball hit by Boren.

With two outs, Hillyer made it 5-3 with an RBI single and, after a walk drawn by Nahlani Quigley, Knutson capped the surge with an RBI single.

South Medford had built a 3-1 lead in the fifth behind a two-run triple by Maleyah Thoele and RBI groundout by Hudson.

Woster and Hillyer each had two hits in Game 2.

The other game Friday wasn’t quite as dramatic, with Boren’s blast giving the Panthers an early cushion to highlight a 3-for-4 outing that included two runs scored and four RBIs. Boren also connected for a solo homer in the seventh.

Woster supplied RBI singles in the second and fourth innings and finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Ledendecker was 2-for-3 and Thoele went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
