Crater, South, North enjoy strong Day 2

Day 2 of the Oregon Relays brought about more of the same for the local contingent, with Tyrone Gorze of Crater creating an impossible pace to challenge and South Medford’s short relay team posting the second-fastest time in school history to highlight track and field action Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

As the stadium lights probed and pulsed with every step during the 1-mile race at night, Gorze made his move on the final lap and soon put the elite field in his wake to win going away at 4 minutes, 8.3 seconds.

The University of Washington-bound Gorze finished comfortably ahead of runner-up Brody Hartley of Walla Walla High in Washington (4:10.97) and third-place finisher Kai Mitchell-Reiss of Ida B. Wells (4:12.01).

Crater teammate Josiah Tostenson placed fifth in 4:14.03.

Gorze was coming off a strong effort in winning the 2-mile race on Friday, when he finished five seconds shy of the state record set by Steve Prefontaine in 1969.

In the 4×100-meter relay, South Medford’s quartet of Brodie Leslie, Deacon Edgar, Benji Krebs and Andrew Walker teamed to place fifth overall — the top finish from an Oregon school — and come an eyelash shy of a school record. The group finished in 42.79 seconds — just nine-hundredths off the standing record of 42.70.

In other standout top-10 efforts, North Medford senior David Fuiava placed second in the discus with a personal record of 49.04 meters and junior teammate Houston Klug finished third in the high jump with his own PR of 1.98 meters.

Crater also grouped together to place sixth in the mixed 4×800 relay in 9:08.88 behind the teamwork of Shaun Garnica, Kara Loftus, Jeffrey Hellmen and Emma West.

PHOENIX INVITATIONAL: At Phoenix, Ethan Dobbins of Phoenix and Olivia Smith of North Valley won the featured 800-meter boys and girls races, respectively, and Wyatt Montgomery of La Pine and Isabela Coffman of Klamath Union did likewise in the 3,000 during Friday night’s Phillips-Klimek Distance Twilight.

Those late-night events kicked off the Phoenix Invitational track and field meet, which saw the Pirates win the boys meet and Cascade Christian gain a half-point win over St. Mary’s in the girls meet.

Autumn Murray won two individual events for the Challengers — the girls 100 hurdles and long jump — and was second in the 300 hurdles to boost her team, while Sidney DeBoer of St. Mary’s won the 100 and 200 and placed runner-up in the long jump and triple jump for a busy Saturday.
