Cascade, St. Mary’s wage tight battle at districts

The boys track and field teams from Cascade Christian and St. Mary’s waged a back-and-forth battle during the Class 3A District 5 championships over the course of Friday and Saturday at St. Mary’s School.

With names from at least one of those teams among the top-2 finishers in 11 of the 17 events, there wasn’t much that separated the Challengers and Crusaders as Cascade Christian eked out a 118-108 advantage for the rights to be called district champions.

The Medford private schools enjoyed similar success in the girls meet — putting an athlete among the top-2 in 12 of the 17 events — but that didn’t stop Coquille from claiming the girls title with 159.33 points.

The Challenger girls posted 129.33 points and Crusaders had 121 to finish second and third, respectively.

Cascade Christian’s boys team received championship efforts from sophomore Tayen Landers in the 800 in 2 minutes, 6.97 seconds, freshman Michael Ragan in the 3,000 (9:55.39), senior Matthew Moses in the shot put (44 feet, 7 inches) and freshman Jadon Dykes in the long jump (20-11).

All were personal records except for Moses, who set a season record.

For the St. Mary’s boys, district titles were earned by junior Indiana Olson in the 400 (51.80 seconds), freshman Aiden DeBoer with a PR in the high jump (5-8) and junior TJ Flowers with a PR in the triple jump (39-10.5). The Crusaders also swept the 4×100 and 4×400 relay titles.

Sidney DeBoer may have enjoyed the best meet of all for the St. Mary’s girls after securing district titles in the 100 (13.06), 200 (26.85), long jump (18-2.5) and triple jump (37-0.5).

The quadruple win was nothing new to the senior DeBoer, who was one of the Crusaders’ leading scorers in last year’s Class 3A state championships. Her marks in the long jump and triple jump established personal records.

Autumn Murray and Sierra Samhammer traded first- and second-place finishes for Cascade Christian in the hurdles events, with Murray getting the best of her teammate in the 100 hurdles with a personal record of 15.52 seconds while Samhammer turned the tables in the 300 hurdles with her own PR of 46.71.

Murray, a senior, also went on to place second in the long jump to DeBoer by one inch (18-1.5) after establishing a personal record.

St. Mary’s senior Saniyah Ayala earned a district title in the 3,000 (11:49.19) and placed second in the 1,500 (5:27), as well as a first-place mark of 31-2.5 by senior Kelsey Dunn in the shot put.
