The annual Festival on the Rogue, a family-friendly event focused on the upper Rogue watershed’s natural wonders, recreational opportunities and pride of place, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at Upper Rogue Regional Park (formerly Shady Cove Park), 7660 Rogue River Drive, Shady Cove. This year’s festival will include a colorful 25-foot salmon storytelling tent; live music; visits from Smokey Bear; a variety of interesting and educational exhibits; raffles for prizes including free same-day raft trips; artisans selling watershed, river and nature-related arts, crafts and photos; food and more. Veteran’s Powwow: The 23rd annual Rogue Valley Veterans Powwow will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 3 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 4, in the Program Area of the Valley of the Rogue State Park, at exit 45B on Interstate 5, 18 miles north of Medford, between Rogue River and Gold Hill. ‘Windows in Time’ History Lecture: As part of the free “Windows in Time” library lecture series, archaeologist Tatiana Watkins will present “Mining Camps in Oregon’s Early History” at noon Wednesday, June 7, at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave., and via Zoom, and again at noon Wednesday, June 14, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Settlement in the Oregon territory began with the finding of gold, starting in Southern Oregon to expand into what is now Eastern Oregon and the Malheur National Forest. The archaeological interest in mining camps and the miners themselves has been at the forefront of the Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project since its founding in 2017. Watkins will discuss two sites previously recorded as associated with a Chinese mining company, and explain how discussions and knowledge learned from the two sites enable researchers to look at comparable artifact assemblages across mining camps in the Pacific Northwest and use primary documents as a necessary instrument in interpreting the past. Haunted History Tour: Costumed docents will lead an hour-long “Haunted History” tour the second Friday of each month through Sept. 9, in downtown Jacksonville. Learn about ghosts that still linger in Jacksonville’s historic district and a little history about the buildings, their occupants and life in a gold rush town. The 7 and 7:30 p.m. Courthouse tour features stories of brothels, epidemics and hangings. The 7:15 and 7:45 p.m. Britt Hill tour shares tales of murder, arson, saloons and Oregon’s oldest Chinatown. The walking tours are not your “typical” ghost tours with special effects, but are history tours about real hauntings resulting from past events. Tours are $10; reservations are required. Reservations must be made no later than 4 p.m. on the day of the tour. Tours leave from the Jacksonville Visitors Center at the corner of N. Oregon and C streets. Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre: Dance troupe Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre will perform alongside Mariachi Joya de Oro for its 25th annual gala at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. BFRA is a Southern Oregon dance group that teaches and performs regional folk dances of Mexico. The group started as a high school club in 1994 at South Medford High School; in 2014, the group was approved as a federally recognized nonprofit organization.
