Medford Police Department detectives continue to investigate a shooting at Cedar Links Park in east Medford early Saturday, but little information about the incident has been released to the public. No suspects have been identified, but police said they do not believe the shooting was a random occurrence or that a threat exists to the general public.

Police responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the area of the park, located in the 3100 block of Cedar Links Drive, around 1:20 a.m. Saturday.

One young adult was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound, police said.

Medford police Lt. Geoff Kirkpatrick said detectives have not released a description of the suspects involved.

Social media accounts of the incident showed a low-resolution video shot by witnesses that appears to show two men with firearms, but police have not commented on the videos except to say they are not asking for help from the public at this time. Police have discouraged those involved from posting details to social media, saying it could hinder their investigation.

“A lot of times we’ve got a lot of information. … We don’t want or need the public’s help at this point in tracking these folks down,” Kirkpatrick said Monday.

“If we say, ‘We’re out looking for a guy in a black sweatshirt with a logo on the left side of the chest,’ then that guy takes his black sweatshirt with the logo on the left side of the chest off and he burns it … then he puts on a different color sweatshirt.

“It can be frustrating when people put things on social media when we ask them not to. It happens frequently, but there’s a reason that we hold back and don’t always release all the information that we have. It’s not out of laziness or spite. It’s for a dedicated investigative purpose,” he added.

“The detective assigned to this has been actively working since just after it happened. I think he’s had two hours of sleep since Friday night. Sometimes we just hold things close to us, especially when we’re on a trail. It’s a hard balance, but I think it will be interesting when we get the whole story.”
