Five Bar Supreme posts top trials time for Futurity

Jockey Santiago Jimenez rides Corona B Mine past Jaime Lopez on Nowhere too Run for a victory in the second race Friday at Grants Pass Downs.

Five Bar Supreme drew clear during the fourth race to highlight opening night for the summer horse racing meet at Grants Pass Downs, finishing first overall in the Firecracker Futurity Trials on Friday.

Jockey Guillermo Suarez guided Five Bar Supreme to the fastest finish among the 350-yard trials races, crossing the finish line in 17.61 seconds to edge No Sedona, which was runner-up in the fourth race but third overall among Futurity qualifiers with a time of 17.88 seconds.

Da Bros Cartel, which was ridden by Jacob Enriquez, won the third race in 17.82 seconds and enjoyed the second-best showing among the 2-year-old trials horses.

The top 10 finishers in Friday’s trials races qualified for the marquee race of the eight-day season on July 4, which carries a $63,000 total purse.

Sorelli Lights ranked fourth among the qualifiers at 17.99 and Peregrino AF stands fifth at 18.01.

Rounding out the qualifiers were L Bar D Darlyn (18.060), JR (18.063), Corona B Mine (18.13), Littlerockinrunaway (18.15) and The Midnight Sky (18.17).

Friday’s attendance was 1,485 with a handle of $25,637.

Jockeys Santiago Jimenez, Jaime Lopez and Jose Guerrero each were aboard two winners Friday, with Guerrero riding DC Ladys Dash Eagle to the top finish in the Adequan Derby Challenge time trials. The sixth-race winner finished in 19.74 seconds for 400 yards, just ahead of The Rev Rocker (19.79) with Enriquez on the reins for the 3-year-olds.

Racing continued Saturday and Sunday at GP Downs, with the final legs of the summer meet set for July 1, 2 and 4. Post times are 1 p.m.

Adult admission is $4 and kids 12-and-under are free.

For Saturday’s racing, to celebrate Don Jackson Day, there will be free admission for those wearing a fedora hat, which was Jackson’s signature headwear.

Sunday is Ladies Hat Day, with free admission for ladies wearing a hat (baseball caps excluded). Cash prizes will be awarded for the best Kentucky Derby style hat, best western theme hat, best hat with coordinating outfit and most original hat. There will also be a kid’s category.
