Local streets will close Thursday when Medford School District, the city of Medford and a multitude of other partners hold an active shooter drill at Oakdale Middle School.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 22, at 815 S. Oakdale Ave., agencies will hold the wide-ranging drill that will include local hospitals, Rogue Valley Transportation District and law enforcement.
A grid of streets will be closed for the duration of the drill. Oakdale between Dakota and Belmont, Monroe between Holly and Dakota, Kenyon between Monroe and Barnett, and Whitman between Oakdale and Ogara will be inaccessible.
This is the first time Medford School District has performed this kind of a drill, said Natalie Hurd, public information officer for the district.
“We believe it’s a one-of-a-kind event in the area if not the country,” Hurd said.
A crew from the HBO network has been in town for months filming preparations for the event for a documentary.
At 8 a.m., streets will be blocked off, but representatives from the district did go door to door to warn neighbors of the event ahead of time, including a car with a QR code for more information, Hurd said.
Despite the publicity, it’s a sober occasion.
“We don’t want to do this, and we hope we never have to use it, but we feel it’s our obligation to be prepared — and we owe it to our families, students and staff to keep the community safe,” Hurd said.
The drill is intended to help law enforcement and other agencies practice a swift, efficient response to an active shooter at a school — from law enforcement to first responders moving wounded victims to hospitals, to staff reuniting children with parents, according to a release sent by the district.
Medford police, Medford fire, the city of Medford, Jackson County Emergency Management, Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center and Providence Hospital are some of the agencies participating in the wide-ranging drill, according to the release.
Residents should expect vehicles from multiple agencies including SWAT, ambulances, school buses, RVTD buses, police cars and more Thursday at Oakdale Middle School.
