Rogues sweep twin bill with CCL stars

Medford Rogues pitcher Josh Sandoval delivers a strike against CCL Showcase during his summer debut at Harry & David Field Tuesday evening.

Medford Rogues pitchers were able to stymie the Cascade Collegiate League Showcase team for 14 of the 16 innings played Tuesday night at Harry & David Field, allowing the Rogues to sweep a rain-induced twin bill.

The teams were slated to play Monday before heavy rain throughout the day made the field unplayable. They opted to regroup and play a seven-inning opener on Tuesday, won 9-0 by Medford, before the regularly scheduled nine-inning nightcap, with the Rogues rallying late to earn a 7-4 triumph.

Game 3 of the series was set for Wednesday night before the Rogues (12-4) were set to embark on one of only three road trips this season. Medford will play at the Portland Pickles on Friday and Saturday, and then remain on the road next Tuesday-Thursday for games against the Redding Colt 45’s.

Part of that road trip is spurred along at this time of year by allowing the Medford Mustangs access to Harry & David Field for the annual Coach K Memorial Classic, set to run Wednesday night through Sunday as the Mustangs pay tribute to former manager Sandee Kensinger.

Josh Sandoval got the Rogues off to a dominant start Tuesday while making his summer debut, allowing only three hits with four strikeouts and no walks in his five innings as a starter.

Lalo Barraza and Caughlin Shults each took over for a scoreless inning in relief, with Barraza allowing the only hit between the two relievers.

Offensively, the Rogues were throwing up deuces in just about every inning with two runs in the first, two in the third, two in the fourth and, going above and beyond, three more in the fifth to build a comfortable advantage.

Aidan Dougherty and Caleb Richter each had RBI singles in the first inning, while Deshon Thomas ripped an RBI triple in the third and had a two-out, two-run single in the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Nate Gray followed a one-out double by Mike LaVigne with an RBI single and then the Rogues got consecutive two-out doubles by Cameron Sewell and Dougherty to cap the scoring.

Dylan Torres picked the baton up from his pitching peers in Game 2 and tossed four scoreless innings before allowing a pair of runs in the fifth that pulled CCL Showcase within 4-2. Torres finished with only two hits allowed but walked five and struck out four.

Ashland’s Gabe Brabec helped steady the ship with a scoreless sixth inning before allowing a pair of runs in the seventh that knotted the score at 4-all. Brabec struck out five and allowed two hits with no walks in his two innings of relief.

Fortunately for the hometown fans, Medford had an immediate answer with a go-ahead run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to reclaim momentum. Ethan Buckley provided a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh, while Dougherty and Thomas plated the final runs in the eighth.

Camden Stephens shut the door on the visitors with two scoreless and hitless innings of relief, striking out seven with one walk.

Dougherty finished 4-for-5 with one run and three RBIs, while Cody Nitowitz went 2-for-3 with two runs.
