La Clinica’s new Mobile Health Center burns in alleged arson

Purchased for $728,000, the mobile center that burned Friday replaced one that had served thousands of patients countywide since 2012.

In its first week in service, La Clinica’s new Mobile Health Center went up in flames early Friday morning when a Medford man allegedly burglarized and burned the vehicle.

Around 3:30 a.m., police arrested Daniel Timothy Garay, 31, for second-degree arson, second-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Garay had allegedly broken into the roughly 40-foot trailer, located between Medford and Phoenix at the 3600 block of South Pacific Highway.

La Clinica announced that mobile services — medical, dental and mental health — will be suspended until at least mid-July while the nonprofit figures out how it can restore them.

The mobile center’s alarm went off shortly before 3:30 a.m. Sheriff’s office deputies and Phoenix Police Department officers responded.

The deputies “heard someone talking and moving inside” the trailer, the sheriff’s office said in a release.

“There was evidence of forced entry, and the doors were locked from the inside,” the release said.

Garay allegedly did not comply with deputies’ orders to leave the vehicle, which soon began emitting smoke.

“The team breached the door, entered the trailer and saw smoke and flames spreading rapidly,” the release said. Garay was soon apprehended.

The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.

La Clinica said the vehicle was insured.

Purchased for $728,000 largely with American Rescue Plan Act money, the new mobile center replaced one that served thousands of patients countywide starting in 2012, La Clinica’s release said.

Many patients who rely on La Clinica’s mobile center receive services at places such as Set Free Christian Fellowship, Rogue Crossings (the urban campground in Medford), the Medford Navigation Center and the OHRA Center in Ashland.

The older vehicle may be pressed into service once again, the release said.

“We’ll need to explore what’s possible and helpful to the community,” Ed Smith-Burns, La Clinica’s community partnership director, said in the release.
