Brabec bolsters Rogues in win over Redding

With Gabe Brabec and Camden Stephens in firm command on the mound and battery mate Tyler Horner supplying energy to the offense, the Medford Rogues were able to avoid a series sweep late Thursday night at the hands of the Redding Colt 45s.

Brabec mitigated the damage of seven hits allowed over six innings on the bump and Stephens closed the door on any hopes of a Redding comeback over the final three innings to help lead Medford to a 7-2 triumph at Harry & David Field.

Despite dropping the first two games of the series in narrow fashion, the Rogues (26-7) will be able to take at least a little momentum into their three-game homestand against the Sacramento Heat. Series play was set to begin at 6:35 p.m. Friday, with games at the same time Saturday and Sunday.

On Thursday night, Brabec was steady in not allowing too much of an opportunity for the Colt 45s.

The recent Ashland High graduate walked only one batter and hit another but got out of trouble with a double-play ball in the second inning started by third baseman Aidan Dougherty among nine groundball outs.

Brabec also finished with five strikeouts in one of his longest outings of the summer. The only run against him in the sixth inning was unearned after the Rogues committed their second error of the game.

Stephens allowed one ninth-inning run on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in three innings of work.

Horner, an Oregon Tech product, went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to stir up the Medford offense, with Deshon Thomas going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Kaleb Latimer finishing 2-for-4 with one run.

Jonathan Mendez hit a one-out double and scored in the first inning to get the Rogues off to a good start and, after Redding tied the game in the sixth at 1-all, Medford used two-run frames in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to create a winning cushion.

Dougherty scored a go-ahead run in the sixth after hitting a one-out double and scoring on a single by Thomas. Caleb Richter later added an RBI single.

In the seventh, Nate Gray, Cody Nitowitz and Mendez opened the inning by drawing walks to load the bases. Horner followed with a two-run single, which he later duplicated in the eighth.
