Barnstormer’s Vintage Fair returns to downtown Medford with a twist

- Shoppers look for bargains and treasures at the Barnstormer's With A Twist market at Pear Blossom Park in downtown Medford Friday.
Rows and rows of tents lined Pear Blossom Park in downtown Medford Friday afternoon as vendors began setting up clothes racks, display shelves and other temptations for soon-to-arrive shoppers.
The local event — featuring goods ranging from trendy threads to handmade candles to garden ornaments — brought flair and fun from a bunch of local vendors and some from out of state.
“It looks better than I could have ever expected, and the vendors did such a good job displaying their stuff and all the decor, it all came together really nice,” said Shelly Britt, owner and coordinator of Barnstormer’s Vintage Fair since its inception in 2011.
Britt puts on three Barnstormer’s shows a year — two at The Expo in Central Point, and one at Pear Blossom Park. The local event brings out an eclectic mix of vendors selling rustic goods, farmhouse-style decor and other unique items and knick-knacks.
This summer’s rendition of the show brought a special twist for visitors and vendors, Britt said.
“The twist is that this is not a vintage-only market,” Britt said. “[Barnstormer’s With a Twist] allows us to include a lot of the local small businesses that we can’t include in the vintage market.”
The show continues from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Pear Blossom Park, 204 N. Bartlett St.
On Friday evening, the show boasted a DJ dropping groovy tunes, a dance floor and even a martini bar to keep the good times flowing.
“It’s always a fun mix of people that come to these kinds of events,” said vendor Ben Begines of Rusty Birds. “This is my first time, and I think it’s the company’s first time here as well.”
Traveling from Vancouver, Washington, Begines’ tent brimmed with rustic outdoor ornaments and decor to beautify the yard.
“I like meeting people and talking to them and getting their feedback,” said Connie Chan, owner of Bop Pop Pet Boutique in Medford.
It was Chan’s first time attending Barnstormer’s event as a vendor and showing off her collection of handmade pet accessories.
“Bop Pop started in August of last year,” Chan said. “It’s my dog Rufus that inspired it.”
Coming from a multi-decade career as an art director, Chan’s new business offers ornate pet products from hands-free dog leashes to cute bows.
“I kind of got addicted to the sewing machine and went wild,” Chan said of her hobby that evolved into a small business.
Sisters and co-owners of Firelight Laser Design, Jeaneen Beasley and Linda Day, were excited to show their product at Barnstormer’s for the first time.
“We’re a laser design company out of Grants Pass, and we do everything from earrings to custom signage,” Beasley said. “It’s fun for us, because you meet a lot of great people.”
Many new and first-time vendors were selling goods Friday, but the event included longtime locals such as clothing store Rogue Wear and fragrance- and candle-maker 7 & Co.
“I love seeing the people, and I love seeing customers, previous customers and new customers, just everyone coming out and shopping and getting to know each other,” 7 & Co. owner Danielle Sellers said.
“It’s so humbling to see people come out, even in climate like this with the smoke and the heat, and even just to show a little bit of support to us means a lot,” said Tasha Lopez, owner of Rogue Wear. “We can’t stay in business without our community.”
With Friday’s early success, Britt hopes to make Barnstormer’s With a Twist an annual feature of the Barnstormer’s event schedule.
“I hope so, I’d love to,” Britt said of seeing the summer show return. “I’m hoping for a couple thousand people [to attend the Friday and Saturday shows]. I know we’ve sold a few hundred presale tickets for tonight.”
“The thing that I love most about this is just giving these amazing vendors the opportunity to really show off their product, and I’m so proud of the work that they do,” Britt added.
