ASHLAND — A consistent track record under head coach Jenni Rosenberg has the rest of the Cascade Conference believing that the Southern Oregon women’s soccer team can weather the losses of a slew of all-star performers this fall.

The Raiders were picked second behind favorite College of Idaho in the CCC preseason coaches’ poll, which was released Monday by the conference office. The teams tied for second place with matching 9-1-2 circuit records last year, but the Yotes return nine starters to SOU’s five and added a handful of transfers ready to contribute.

Eastern Oregon was picked third and Northwest (Wash.), the defending regular-season and tournament champion, was fourth among 13 teams in the poll.

The Raiders have turned in eight consecutive winning conference records and placed second in each of the last two seasons, combining for a 19-3-2 CCC mark in 2021 and ‘22. They open their 2023 schedule at home against Simpson (Calif.) on Aug. 20, and season tickets are available now at souraiders.com/tickets.

SOU brings back 15 players, including five starters, from last year’s team that pieced together a school-record unbeaten streak of 12 games before going down in the CCC Tournament semifinals against C of I.

Among their most season returners are senior midfielder Malaika Quigley and junior defender Sophia Connell, both All-CCC honorable mention recipients. Goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez has compiled 63 saves while allowing just seven goals in 21 career appearances.

The squad will have a new look elsewhere, needing to replace the players responsible for 22 of its 28 goals and key pieces of a back line that gave up just nine during an 11-5-3 campaign.
