Amazon is the target of a disturbing new labor claim from its employees

Amazon (AMZN) – Get Free Report is once again dealing with a labor-related issue.

Amazon’s in-house clinics are reportedly pushing injured employees to continue working, according to an investigation by WIRED.

The magazine said it spoke with 11 on-site medical representatives who worked with AmCare, which is Amazon’s on-site first aid clinic. The interviewees claim that Amazon’s system risks the health of its employees by allowing them to return to work with injuries rather than sending them over to doctors that can treat them appropriately.

WIRED’s report says that Amazon received a citation in April from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration which found that the online retailer endangered the health of its employees. It found that over a six-month period, Amazon staff that had serious injuries were put back to work and not brought to doctors, which potentially led to longer term pain.

The report also said that eight of the on-site medical representatives “faced direct pressure” from managers to ensure that there weren’t too many workers that were being sent to doctors to receive appropriate care.

An example in the report was of a fulfillment center in Utah where a medical representative named Jed Martinez said that he was told by senior operations managers to lower the number of employees that were sent to doctors from about five to six per week to about one to two per week.

A spokesperson for Amazon disputed the claims in the report, saying that suggestions intentional or systematic delays of medical care are “false.”
