Challengers clip Eagles in four sets

EAGLE POINT — Not much separated Class 3A Cascade Christian and 5A Eagle Point during a nonconference volleyball match, but what little there was went the Challengers’ way as they held on for a four-set victory Tuesday, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22.

Senior outside hitter Madison Todd led a balanced attack for the Challengers (3-1) with match-highs in kills (13) and digs (21) for her team. Senior Maddi Carter and junior Poppy Freeman also added 11 kills apiece, while Carter chipped in with 14 digs.

This trio were the beneficiaries of a fantastic effort from Molly Griffin, who dished out 43 assists to propel Cascade Christian’s offense.

Sydney Shipman, Freeman and Carter each added two aces for the Challengers.

Makynlee Schauffler paced Eagle Point with 28 assists, seven digs and three aces, while Aaliyah O’Brien highlighted the Eagles’ defense with 17 digs and provided two assists for the attack.

Baylee Mullen chimed in with 12 digs, 10 kills and an ace for Eagle Point (4-3).

ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: At Roseburg, South Medford got off to a good start but couldn’t maintain momentum in the Southwest Conference contest as Roseburg prevailed in four sets, 21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-18.

Mayen Akpan powered home 19 kills to go with four digs, two blocks and two aces for South Medford, while Julia Slaughter contributed 24 assists, four kills and three digs and Telulah Courson chipped in with eight digs and six assists.

Daija Malcolm also had four kills and two blocks for the Panthers (2-3, 0-1 SWC), who host North Medford at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

SOUTH EUGENE 3, NORTH MEDFORD 2: North Medford claimed the first two sets but couldn’t seal the deal as South Eugene rallied for a Southwest Conference victory in five sets, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 13-15.

Paije Carpenter had 17 kills and 12 digs to pace the Black Tornado (4-2, 0-1 SWC), who also got 28 digs and three aces from Reagan Boice.

CRATER 3, MAZAMA 1: At Klamath Falls, Crater continued its hot streak to start the season by winning a fifth straight contest, outlasting Mazama 25-16, 25-12, 23-25, 25-4.

Senior setter Taylee Wilson helped the Comets with 18 assists and three aces, while Crater also got 16 digs apiece from Joslyhn Pope and Alexa Gugliotta, who also recorded six kills and five aces.

SUTHERLIN 3, PHOENIX 2: At Sutherlin, Ariah Potts had 14 digs and six kills, Seneca Ikemire added four kills and two blocks and Isha Van Ness came up with 12 digs but Phoenix fell short despite serving 95% for the match.

Sutherlin held on in five sets, 24-26, 25-13, 25-18, 25-27, 15-13.

Phoenix (3-3) got strong outings from freshmen Lily Quintero (12 assists, five kills, two aces), Breea Potts (10 assists, three kills, six digs), Etta Allen (four kills, two blocks) and Maezy Thornton (four kills). Sophomore Adrianna Flores also had 12 digs.
