Boger’s impact carries on for North Medford

North Medford's Olivia Boger and South Medford's Raegan Burke battle for the ball during the second half in Medford Tuesday.

If the Golden Boot Award was a thing in Southwest Conference girls soccer, North Medford’s Olivia Boger certainly would find her name toward the top of that list.

Through five games this season, the junior has been involved in all but one of her team’s goals. She has scored eight times and also assisted on one for North Medford.

“If we can get her the ball, she’s going to score in some way,” said Black Tornado coach Morgan Barry. “She is our girl that we try to get the ball to.”

If you ask Boger, she is just the recipient of all the valuable production by her teammates at North Medford.

“It’s all my teammates,” she said. “I just happen to have the finishing parts.”

On Tuesday night, her knack to finish her teammates’ plays was on full display after she scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over South Medford to help her team take control of second place in the SWC.

With the match tied 1-all in the 75th minute, Boger found the back of the net off a corner kick from Bella Driskell to seal the final score and halt a slight two-game losing streak for the Black Tornado (3-2, 3-2 SWC).

Host South Medford dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play despite taking a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when Avery Zahniser scored off her body on a corner kick by Tyler Hampson.

In the 66th minute, Driskell was able to even things up after being credited with a goal when her corner kick ricocheted off a Panther defender and into the goal — setting the stage for Boger’s big goal in the crosstown rivalry.

Boger’s notoriety as a scorer has earned her the respect of her opponents, and their constant attention. During Tuesday’s match, there wasn’t a time when she was without a South Medford shadow, or being swarmed by multiple defenders whenever the ball entered her vicinity.

Because of that growing reputation, Barry has had to find new ways to get her star forward the ball to create opportunities.

“Their goal is to double-team her,” Barry said. “So we have to try to find ways to get her the ball … we couldn’t do it without her.”

When watching her fight through the double-teams, added the coach, Boger has shown a knack to eventually break free and patiently find a window to score.

Boger admitted that wasn’t always the case for her, with mistakes in one-on-one situations due to nervousness slowing her success rate in past seasons.

This year, however, she has dealt with that nervousness by perfecting her craft.

“Just working on (scoring) every day,” Boger said of her routine. “I’m always working on finishing it, in practice and working on it by myself.”

This type of determination is fueled by a competitive fire. Barry, who has coached her since freshman year, has seen the work pay off after Boger scored 16 goals last year and was one of the team’s leading goal-scorers her freshman year.

“You can tell when she’s not at practice, she’s at home playing with that ball constantly,” said Barry. “She’s comfortable with it. She’s confident with it.”

Boger’s Black Tornado teammates agree that there’s an undeniable fire that drives her on the pitch.

“She’s been on fire with everything that she does,” said Driskell. “She shoots, she scores, she’s always running and moving. She’s always going fast and everything she does is with her heart.”

For Boger, she wants to go all-out in everything she does.

“You’ve got to bring it every time,” she said. “You can’t slack on that. You have to have that (competitiveness).”

That drive has led to a very successful high school career in multiple sports. Since her freshman year, Boger has been on the varsity team for soccer, basketball and track and field.

Whichever sport she’s playing at the time, Boger has made an impact for North.

“She’s a player you want on every team,” said Barry. “Everybody wants her.”

The schedule of being a multisport athlete has kept Boger “super busy” throughout the years, and she said her focus is leaning more toward soccer as she aims to continue playing at the college level.

While her early season scoring barrage has been noteworthy, Boger is equally determined to add to her assist total.

“I love to score, but I also love to assist even more because it’s like sharing it with my teammates more,” said Boger. “ I’m hoping to get a bunch more assists this year.”
