PREP VB: Eagles take down Grizzlies for MWL win

EAGLE POINT — Having lost three of their last four matches, Eagle Point’s volleyball team was definitely in need of a cleansing contest Tuesday night against Ashland.

Brimming with another balanced effort, the Eagles got just that as they closed out the visiting Grizzlies 25-15, 25-16, 25-18 for a Midwestern League victory.
Eagle Point (7-6, 3-2 MWL) was able to apply steady pressure on Ashland (1-6, 0-4) through its service game, with Makynlee Schauffler going 16-for-16 with four aces and Emma Kness adding a 15-for-15 outing with two aces. Addison Holcomb generated a pair of aces along with her nine kills and 10 digs.
“We struggled on serve-receive tonight, they had a really good float serve,” said Ashland head coach Tia Khachitphet. “It made it hard to pass, which makes it hard to get a good play going and find a rhythm.”

Conversely, Schauffler was able to keep Eagle Point’s offense in rhythm with 24 assists to go with her three digs, with Kness posting eight kills and seven digs and also joining Aaliyah O’Brien (12 digs) with good passing for the Eagles.
Baylee Mullen added seven kills and Megan Carr had three blocks for EP.
Mila Nikolic, a junior outside hitter, came out strong for Ashland and registered five kills, two blocks and one ace, while Savannah Elster had 13 digs for the Grizzlies.
SHELDON 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: South Medford sophomore Mayen Akpan amassed 23 kills, 12 digs and two blocks and senior Brooke Johnston had a strong all-around game with eight kills, 10 digs and one block in the Southwest Conference loss at home.
The kills and digs totals were personal records for Akpan.
Sheldon shook off a first-set loss to claim the next three sets and win 17-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-13.
Julia Slaughter contributed 36 assists and a pair of aces for the Panthers (4-6, 2-3 SWC), while Daija Malcolm had two kills and two blocks against the Irish (9-5, 3-1).
KLAMATH UNION 3, PHOENIX 0: At Phoenix, Ariah Potts secured a team-high 17 digs to go with five kills and Adrianna Flores added 12 digs but Phoenix came up short in the Skyline Conference match, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16.
Breea Potts finished with 10 assists, nine digs and was perfect at the service line for the Pirates (3-9, 0-2 Sky), and Lily Quintero had 10 digs and eight assists.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, COQUILLE 0: Fifth-ranked Cascade Christian earned its sixth straight win with a dominant effort, sweeping No. 10 Coquille 25-12, 25-12, 25-17 for a Far West League home victory.
Maddie Todd pounded down 14 kills and Maddi Carter notched seven kills, 10 digs and two blocks to pace the Challengers (9-2, 3-0 FWL). Molly Griffin collected 25 assists and five digs, while Grace McCauley picked up nine digs and Isabel McCauley had seven digs.
ST. MARY’S 3, DOUGLAS 0: St. Mary’s senior Noelle Thickett opened up the offense with 29 assists, with Ada Bernard providing a bulk of those kills with 15 as the Crusaders had little trouble earning the Far West League home win, 25-14, 25-21, 25-11.
Emma Johnston supplied nine kills and Julia Hansen had five kills and was 20-for-20 from the service line with six aces after mixing up styles and locations for St. Mary’s (5-2, 2-0 FWL).
The Crusaders had 13 aces overall, and Sydney Holdermann led her team with 14 digs.
