Mechanical mayhem: Monster Truck Nitro Tour heads to Southern Oregon Speedway

- Monster trucks will compete in a variety of events during the Monster Truck Nitro Tour, including wheelie contests, much like this stunt pulled off by driver Lee Plato in his truck, Scattered.
Wheelies, rough racing and wicked, dirt-filled action are on the menu for the upcoming Monster Truck Nitro Tour at the Southern Oregon Speedway in Central Point.
The massive, mechanical monstrosities will participate in three events — a wheelie contest, racing and the fan-favorite monster truck freestyle, where drivers show off their skills with high-flying stunts to earn the roar of the crowd.
“It’s an all-out blitz with drivers hitting every obstacle with big air and crazy tricks,” said Tony Maderazzo, chief operating officer of the Monster Truck Nitro Tour. “The weather is going to be great too.”
The family-friendly Monster Truck Nitro Tour will have three shows — at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Each show will have a pit party an hour and a half in advance for attendees to hang out and meet the monster truck drivers.
While the Nitro Tour has been held at The Expo in the past, organizers said they are excited to take advantage of the extra space offered at the Southern Oregon Speedway.
“We are coming out to the speedway to have big air with more space, and we are going to be bringing our top show that fans from Southern Oregon are used to with the most trucks,” Maderazzo said. “For us, the speedway was chosen because it allows for a much larger area, and a lot of different things can happen in that space.”
With the outdoor venue, the Monster Truck Nitro Tour will bring in the “jet ambulance” — which includes a Westinghouse J34 turbojet engine installed inside. The jet ambulance and its 3,000 pounds of thrust will be used to burn down a scrapped vehicle during the shows.
“You can’t do that inside,” Maderazzo said.
The Nitro Tour will include five monster truck drivers showcasing their skills during the wheelie contest, racing event and monster truck freestyle.
The competitors include Scattered, driven by Lee Plato; Skull Krusher, operated by 17-year-old driver Shane Plato; Wild Card, driven by Bo Swanson; T-Maxxx, driven by David Tucker; and Obsessed, driven by Eric Swanson.
On the 17-year-old driver, Maderazzo said, “He’s one of world’s youngest monster truck drivers and worked his way up to full size.”
The wheelie contest will involve the monster truck drivers bringing their best two-wheeled moves to the track, with the winner being chosen by the crowd.
The racing portion will be a “Chicago style” race, with the competitors going head to head until two finalists face off to take the crown.
In the final and most popular event, the freestyle, each driver will put on a performance with stunts through ramps and obstacles on the track with wheelies, doughnuts and even backflips.
“It’s one at a time and kind of what everyone thinks of when they think of monster trucks,” Maderazzo said. “I think everybody does this for the glory of the fans, and we want them involved and excited about it.”
The winners of both the freestyle event and wheelie contest are determined by the crowd, and which driver gets the most noise following their feat.
“The fans cheer it off, and they determine the winner of those events,” Maderazzo said.
Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for kids ages 3 to 12, with additional packages including VIP admission, a pit party pass and other perks available for purchase.
