GIRLS XC: Crater narrowly misses snapping Summit streak

EUGENE — Top-5 finishes from Lindsay Siebert and Emma West weren’t enough for the Crater girls cross country team to summit to the top of the Class 5A championships on Saturday afternoon.

Streaks were continued at Lane Community College as Summit escaped Crater by two points for its 15th consecutive state title and Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley became the 12th person in Oregon to be heralded as a three-time cross country state champion with her winning time of 17 minutes, 5.8 seconds.

“I was hoping we’d break the (Summit) streak this year, to be honest,” said Siebert, “but I can’t help but applaud them for such an amazing performance.”

“That’s a legacy right there,” she added. “That’s a hard streak to break because for them, winning became a habit.”

Added West: “We can’t be mad about that because we gave them a run for their money.”

The Storm kept their title reign alive with 64 points after the Comets tallied 66 points to finish in second place.

The Comets did find themselves in ideal scoring, especially after Siebert finished third (18:24.9) and West was on her heels in fourth place (18:32.3) to put the Storm in a hole as the rest of the runners began crossing the finish line.

“Lindsay and Emma came out fighting,” said Crater cross country coach Justin Loftus. “We knew it would be a battle, especially with the field.”

And Summit did show up for the battle as four of its runners — Eva Dicharry (seventh, 18:50.9), Skye Knox (10th, 19:13.2), Taylin Bowen (13th, 19:19.6) and Elizabeth Connolly (17th, 19:41.3) — finished before Crater’s third scorer to turn the tide back in its favor.

The deciding factor came when Ainslie Knox (20:33.8) fended off Crater’s Hannah Pygman and Haddie Barsalou for 28th place to secure the victory by point total for Summit after a tie would have resulted in a Crater victory due to meet tiebreakers.

“You hate to see that,” Loftus said about the final results. “But you’re also just so proud of what the girls accomplished and you know how much they put in this year.”
