- Southern Oregon's Mia Ammons, a sophomore forward, scored the lone goal in the Raiders' quarterfinal round clash with Carroll (Mont.) in the Cascade Conference Championships.
SPRINGFIELD — Mia Ammons took matters into her own hands in the 85th minute to end a stalemate in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships, delivering Southern Oregon’s signature win of the season with one of its most electric goals.
Ammons, a sophomore forward, found herself with a loose ball after it popped out 35 yards away from the goal, turned, fired, and stuck it off the left post and into the net, making the Raiders 1-0 winners against Carroll (Mont.) on Monday night at Les Schwab Sports Park.
The Raiders improved to 9-6-4 overall, and became the first No. 7 seed to get past a No. 2 seed in the tournament since 2018. They’re into the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season — set for a date at 7 p.m. Wednesday with No. 15-ranked College of Idaho, the CCC’s regular-season champion.
Not only did the Raiders stay alive, but they made 11th-year coach Jenni Rosenberg the first 100-game winner in SOU soccer history.
SOU often looked like the higher seed against the Saints (11-2-4), who presented a matchup favorable as further shown in the teams’ 1-1 draw three weeks ago. Wet, frigid and windy conditions limited chances on both sides.
Carroll mustered four mostly harmless shots on goal, each of which Ashlynn Hernandez stopped. The Raiders only generated the one from Ammons, but they had several more near misses while playing direct throughout the night.
Ammons’ goal was her fourth of the season, and her first game-winner as a Raider. The Raiders had not previously scored a game-winner in the second half all season.
They’ll go for another first on Wednesday: They’ve never previously reached the tournament final, either.
College of Idaho won its semifinal against No. 8 seed Bushnell, 2-0. It was the Yotes’ 16th consecutive win, a streak that included a 1-0 defeat of SOU on Sept. 29 in Caldwell.
The Raiders are unbeaten in five consecutives matchups against the Saints.

SOU 5, CORBAN 0: At Springfield, No. 22-ranked Southern Oregon and Corban looked as mismatched as their seeds indicated in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships..
SOU, the regular season champion, opened the postseason by pocketing its 10th consecutive win, 5-0 over the No. 8-seeded Warriors amid heavy rain and wind at Les Schwab Sports Park. The Raiders (17-2 overall) advanced for the sixth consecutive season to the semifinals, which they’ll play at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Oregon Tech.
They peppered the Warriors (4-7-7) with 28 total shots, starting the onslaught in the 21st minute when Adrian Villegas took a loose ball in the box and fired his team-leading 13th goal. Two minutes before halftime, Evan Norconk passed ahead on a counter to Alan Gaytan for a breakaway goal in stride that made it 2-0.
Norconk got a goal of his own by the 51st minute — his 10th of the season — and in the 63rd minute Brad Thomas passed from beyond midfield to set up Mustafa Daggig in the box for a four-goal lead.
The advantage was large enough to keep the Raiders’ legs fresh for Wednesday: Of the 23 players available on their active postseason roster, 22 of them got on the field. Tybalt Thornberry, one of three Raiders to play all 90 minutes, scored the final goal 35 seconds before the final buzzer when Kevin Nevinger got into the defense and passed back to him.
Casey Ruvolo made three saves in SOU’s 11th shutout of the season. In two matchups against Corban, the Raiders outscored the Warriors 10-1.
They’ve still never lost in 14 all-time tournament games, going to 9-0-5.
The other top-three seeds, No. 2 Warner Pacific and No. 3 College of Idaho, also got through and will meet in the other semifinal.
