Ashland concert fundraiser for Ukrainian sister city to feature Broadway star

Broadway singer Steffanie Garrard Leigh will return to the Rogue Valley for “Shine for Ukraine,” an upcoming benefit concert supporting one of Ashland’s sister cities, Sviatohirsk, Ukraine.

The benefit concert will support rebuild efforts in Sviatohirsk after more than 70% of the town was destroyed when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, displacing the majority of the town’s population.

Leigh, an Ashland High School graduate, has featured in an assortment of Broadway musicals such as starring as Mary Poppins in the 2011 Disney musical along with roles in “Venus in Fur” at the Singapore Repertory in Virginia.

Other performers at “Shine for Ukraine” include the Ashland Peace Choir with the Ashland High School Choir, the Ukrainian Folk Troupe, award-winning concert pianist Iryna Kudielina, the Ukrainian Dancers, cellist and composer Kris Yenney and others.

The concert is set from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Historic Ashland Armory, located at 208 Oak St., in Ashland.

Tickets are $20 per attendee and are available at asap.booktix.com. Tickets can also be purchased at Paddington Station in downtown Ashland or at the door the day of the concert.

The event is organized by the Ashland-Sviatohirsk Aid Project.

“We’re trying to provide funds that go to things that provide immediate and tangible assistance,” organizer Paul Huard said of the concert for Sviatohirsk.

Some of the infrastructural needs that fundraiser organizers hope to aid include repairing and replacing power lines, purchasing vital construction equipment and replacing hundreds of windows blown out during the invasion.

“This city is in a war zone. A great deal of the residential area was blown out by Russian munitions,” said Huard, an Ashland High School teacher who volunteered in Ukraine this past summer with the organization Front Line Kitchen. “We are funding pilot projects to replace 250 windows to keep the cold and wet out and the heat in.”

Beyond the live entertainment, the show will also include brief reports from volunteers who have worked in relief roles in Ukraine and information about relief and recovery efforts sponsored by ASAP.

Additional features of the event include auctions, appetizers and desserts and an open bar with beer and wine.

“We have items donated from the community — from ski packages to Mt. Ashland to gift certificates at local restaurants,” Huard said of the silent auction. “It will be a lovely evening.”
