Caltrans has closed Interstate 5 to traffic in parts of Northern California, transportation officials reported Saturday afternoon.
At Caltrans’ request, southbound I-5 traffic will be held in Oregon at milepost 11 in south Ashland and released every 20 minutes, according to a news release from the Oregon Department of Transportation.
I-5 is closed to northbound traffic 10 miles north of Redding in Shasta County due to spinouts, Caltrans reported.
The interstate also is closed to southbound traffic 3.5 miles north of Weed in Siskiyou County due to snow, Caltrans said.
ODOT warned of extended delays and said chain restrictions over the Siskiyou Pass along I-5 would continue. Travel is not advised at this time, according to the release.
“Postpone your trip, if possible. Do not detour on secondary roads; they are not maintained for winter travel,” the release said.
Meanwhile, Highway 62 between Union Creek and Crater Lake National Park’s southern entrance is open to traffic, but ODOT said highways near Diamond Lake and Crater Lake are closed due to extreme winter weather conditions, including Highway 230 from Union Creek to Highway 138E at the Diamond Lake Junction and Highway 138E 11 miles east of Glide to Highway 97.
“Travel is strongly discouraged,” ODOT said.
ODOT also said Highway 66 is closed 4 miles east of Ashland to milepost 66 in Klamath County due to extreme winter weather conditions.
