OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: Table Rocks waterfalls, ice skating halted, vets hunt and more

Published 10:45 am Wednesday, January 31, 2024

Water trickles down from from Lower Table Rock last week, after heavy rain soaked the area. The flat-topped Table Rocks rise about 800 feet from the valley floor a few miles north of Medford.

Kyle Sullivan of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management reported an unusual sight at the Table Rocks last week: waterfalls.

“Thanks to some extra rain, the Table Rocks in Medford, Oregon, can now add water features to their long list of attributes,” he wrote in a post on his agency’s regional social media page. The post featured photos of the scene, too.

The Upper and Lower Table Rocks, two of the most prominent topographic features in the Rogue Valley, are flat-topped buttes that rise about 800 feet above the Rogue River. They are designated an “area of critical environmental concern,” to help protect its plants, animals, geology, scenery and educational opportunities.

“We’re proud to care for this special area along with The Nature Conservancy, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Rhonde and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians,” Sullivan wrote.

Warm weather closes Ashland ice rink

The Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink is closed until further notice due to warm weather, according to a city announcement updated on Tuesday.

The rink is expected to remain closed when daily temperatures rise above 50-55 degrees. The rink will reopen when conditions are safe.

High temperatures in Ashland are due to dip back down into the 40s on Friday.

There was no word on the possible cancellation of a Friday night “adapted skating clinic and family fun night” for skaters with intellectual and developmental disabilities set for 4:30-6 p.m.

That event, sponsored by Bridging Communities and Autism Society of Southern Oregon, was expected to offer 20-minute lessons designed to help skaters feel more comfortable, learn to fall and get back up safely. The clinic was to be followed by an hour of recreational skating for participants, family and friends.

Reach the city’s parks department at 541-552-2258. Learn more about the skating clinic at buff.ly/3skcqJW.

Veterans waterfowl hunt is Saturday

A day of waterfowl hunting is set aside just for veterans and active military each year in Oregon. This year, that day is Saturday.

Hunters who qualify may take ducks, coots and geese at the established bag limits. All ODFW wildlife areas, except those with seasonal closures to protect big game, are open for the hunt.

Valid proof of veterans or active-duty status issued by the U.S. Department of Defense or Veterans Affairs is required along with all the usual licenses and validations. Some public lands may not be open for hunting.
