Constance A. Hendrycks
July 28, 1932 – February 7, 2024
Constance (Connie) Agnes Hendrycks, 91, of Medford passed away February 7, 2024 surrounded by her loving family at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. Connie was the wife of the late John E. Hendrycks who passed away July 31, 2013, after 55 years of marriage. Connie was the daughter of the late Arthur A. and Agnes M. (Zilavy) Mercer. Connie received her Nursing degree from Marquette University and worked in Pediatrics in Milwaukee, WI and later in San Francisco, CA. She continued her career in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine while she and John raised their four children in San Jose, CA, officially hanging up her stethoscope in 1986.
When her children were young, Connie was very active in the Cub Scouts, serving as a Den Mother for many years, and receiving an honorary Life Membership Award from the George C. Payne Elementary School PTA recognizing her outstanding service to the school and its students. She was a member of the Red Cross Volunteers Program and single-handedly sewed all of the volunteers’ uniforms.
In the late-1980’s Connie and John retired near Bly, OR where they were both active in the St. James Catholic Church family, and she dusted off her stethoscope to help organize rural medical services assisting those in the community. From the early-1990’s, Connie was a very active member of the Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland, OR. Connie only recently ‘retired’ from serving the church’s home bound community by delivering the eucharist each week. To many she was a constant source of creativity, optimism and inspiration, a calmer of chaos or a tireless cheerleader. To those who knew her best she was an energetic, kind, generous, and faith-filled adventurer who always wanted to experience the joys of life with those she loved.
