- Jackson County Fire District 3 will soak sheriff's deputies this Saturday, Feb. 24, at the sheriff's office headquarters in Central Point. The event will include food trucks, swag and an appearance by local character actor Daniel Zacapa, best known for his role as the police chief Squidman Palledorous in the 1993 movie "The Sandlot."
Sheriff Nate Sickler will brave the firehose and get cold for a cause Saturday morning as part of a fundraising event in Central Point featuring everything from food trucks to a local celebrity.
Jackson County Fire District 3 firefighters will drench the sheriff and his deputies as part of a “Soak-A-Sheriff” fundraiser supporting Special Olympics Oregon athletes. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office headquarters parking lot, 5179 Crater Lake Highway in Central Point.
The event aims to be an all-ages spectacle with attractions for kids including a “kiddie jail” and, for kids-at-heart, an appearance from local character actor Daniel Zacapa — best known for his role as the police chief Squidman Palledorous in the 1993 movie “The Sandlot.”
Zacapa, who lives in the Rogue Valley, will sign autographed pictures, posters, baseball memorabilia and fun things from the film for Special Olympics.
Kids can also get their picture taken with Polar Plunge Oregon’s polar bear mascot.
Soak-A-Sheriff serves as a preview “micro-fundraiser” ahead of the Southern Oregon Polar Plunge main event, in which local first-responders will jump in an icy cold pool Saturday, March 2, at the Rogue Valley Country Club, 2660 Hillcrest Road in Medford. Last year the event raised about $60,000 for Special Olympics programs, including year-round sports training for athletes, along with uniforms, sports equipment, and health and wellness programs.
