Crater wrestling legacy deepens in 5A tourney

- Crater sophomore Kutter Christensen, top, waits for his cue from the referee for a restart against Redmond's Joseph Downing during their championship match Saturday in Portland.
PORTLAND — For a traditional boys wrestling mainstay like Crater, some of the results at the Class 5A state championships exemplified just that Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum.
The perfect illustration of the past, present and future of the program could be seen in a thorough 13-0 major decision victory at 126 pounds by freshman Aidan Godley.
Godley handled Redmond’s Mason Thynes quite easily by recording a near fall in each period to take the decisive victory.
With the referee’s whistle signaling the end of the match, it also helped clinch a dream scenario for the freshman to help continue his family’s legacy of winning with the Comets.
The generational success could be traced back to his father Justin Godley’s two state titles at 135 pounds in 1999 and 145 pounds in 2000.
“I have wanted this since I was just a little kid,” Aidan Godley said about adding to the family legacy. “It’s pretty cool because my dad always told me that he would help me be a state champ, and now I am one.”
Godley made the most of his state championship debut by pinning Jaxon Harada in 1 minute, 46 seconds in the semifinals after having strong success with a 72-second pin of Lebanon’s Lucas Elliott and 12-3 major decision over Dallas’ Sully Hill.
The overall experience was one that he enjoyed by feeling the crowd’s energy and being underestimated as an underclassman.
“After winning, the crowd would get all loud and it was fun,” he said. “The hard part was feeling like an underdog but knowing at the end of the day it’s who put in the most practice.”
As someone who cherishes the traditions built at Crater, head coach Greg Haga has seen the strong connections within the program and how those past experiences have been passed down over the years.
“They already know the expectations just because their parents know,” said Haga. “Their dad will tell them what they went through, so that’s always easier when it comes to pushing them.”
The future certainly looked bright Saturday night as Godley was joined by fellow freshman Jeremiah Oliva (113) as individual champions. The pair shared the distinction as the first freshman champion for the Comets since Bryson Gutches won an individual state title at 103 pounds in 2002.
Oliva, who dealt with an illness throughout the final day, lived up to his top-seeded billing by scoring a 14-6 major decision over West Albany’s Owen Hoyt in the semifinals before he secured the championship with a 10-1 major decision over Mason Hakki of Thurston.
That type of production from his young wrestlers is a trend that Haga has seen across the Comets’ wrestling room, knowing that they were ready for the big stage after patiently waiting their turn.
“It just shows you that there is a youth movement, you see freshmen now knocking off seniors,” said Haga. “It just shows how hard these guys work for their success.”
Added Godley: “Jeremiah and I are actually workout partners and we’ve been waiting to do this for a long time at this stage.”
With a bright future ahead for both, it kept the present successful for Crater with a fourth-place trophy after posting 186 team points to fend off Canby, which scored 182.
Dallas was crowned the 5A champions with 219.5 points with an individual title from Joseph Johnson (120) along with five other top-four finishers.
An older statesman compared to his fellow Crater state championship, junior Joey Hutchins (138) rounded out the individual title winners for the Comets as a man on a mission in Portland.
Hutchins moved through the semifinals with a 5-2 decision over Dallas’ Andrew Craven, and claimed his first state title with a hard-fought 7-4 decision against Eric Larwin from Bend.
Sophomore Jaxson Godley (144) was unable to join younger brother Aidan at the top of the podium, having to settle for second place after suffering a 10-6 setback to Colton Annis of Thurston in the finals following a semifinals pin of Dallas’ Blake Atterbury in 3:57.
Also placing second for the Comets was sophomore Kutter Christensen, who lost a 7-0 decision to Redmond’s Joseph Downing in the championship match at 150 pounds.
Ryland Walters (fourth, 126) and Philip Alger (fifth, 120) also made podium appearances for the Comets.
Eagle Point junior Brian Cortez (215) was a third-place finisher after an 8-2 decision over Redmond’s William Witcraft, whom he beat earlier by a 1-0 score in the quarterfinals.
Cortez was pinned in 2:17 by the eventual champion Jackson Doman of Canby in the semifinals and bounced back with a 4-1 decision over another Canby’s Tyler Konold to reach the third-place final.
Eagle Point’s Gavin Pogue (157) finished in fifth place after landing an 8-1 decision over Kamdyn Wardlaw of Thurston in that final.
Ashland senior Will Downs (175) fell into fourth place after suffering a 10-7 loss to Centennial’s Ilya Yurko in the third-place final. Downs previously pinned Lebanon’s Josiah Wynn at 4:02 in the consolation bracket.
Downs was sent into the consolation bracket by eventual champion Jackson Potts of Mountain View, who landed a fall in 1:40 during their semifinal clash.
