It wasn’t looking pretty as far as season openers go but North Medford was able to rely on a pair of fourth-year starters to pull out a 6-5 comeback victory over McNary in nonleague baseball Wednesday in Keizer.

The Black Tornado, who trailed 4-0 entering the fourth inning, tallied three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to win in dramatic fashion after Jeremiah Robbins belted a go-ahead two-run home run in the latter.

Fellow senior Frankie Rutigliano, who took over on the mound in the fourth, struck out the side in the seventh to help preserve the victory.

“It was a long drive up and we were a little flat to begin with,” said North Medford head coach Kerry Curtis, “but once we got some momentum going and got some hits going we were able to turn things around a little bit. At 4-0, it wasn’t looking pretty good there for a minute, and McNary’s a good team.”

North Medford began its climb back into the game in the fourth when Robbins drew a walk and, after a single by Kellen Willer, the Tornado got on the board with an RBI single from Colton Morgan. A sacrifice bunt by Dominic Daffron put runners on second and third and Joey Newberg followed with a single up the middle to score Willer and then Morgan came home on a throwing error.

In the sixth, Cameron Nix and Rutigliano set the stage with one-out singles and advanced on a passed ball. Easton Curtis’ sacrifice fly trimmed North’s deficit to 5-4, and then Robbins cleared the fence with his two-run homer.

“That was huge from a guy that’s been around a while,” said coach Curtis.

Rutigliano wound up with three of his six strikeouts in the seventh inning, allowing two hits and one run with four walks in relief of Daffron in the fourth.

SoftballNORTH MEDFORD 4, TIGARD 1: At Tigard, North Medford senior Gabbi Urban went the distance and allowed only one hit — a leadoff home run by Tigard — with one walk and 14 strikeouts to help the Black Tornado win its season opener.

Caileigh Raines drove in two runs on a hard grounder up the middle, while Maili Hamlin and Natalie Tlascala each went 2-for-4 for North Medford.

Track and FieldNORTH MEDFORD SWEEPS: At Roseburg, North Medford senior Antonio Martinez won the 100- and 200-meter sprints and Houston Klug cleared a personal record 6 feet, 8 inches in the high jump to lead the Black Tornado boys to an 84-58 win over Roseburg.

Martinez set a PR in the 100 at 11.04 seconds and won in 22.89 in the 200.

Matthew Donovan (400) and Alec Winters (800) also won individual events on the track for the Black Tornado, while field event wins were earned by Everett Cam (shot put), Trey Kennedy-Coleman (discus), Jonathan Horn (javelin) and Heston Likens (pole vault).

Atonio went 85-11.5 in winning the discus and 30-5 in the shot put, while Carpenter hit 106-5 in the javelin and 33-4.5 in the triple jump and Donovan claimed the 100 in 12.71 and long jump in 16-7.
