Red Cross, Jackson County Fire District 3 to install free home smoke alarms

Red Cross Cascades and Jackson County Fire District 3 will install smoke alarms for free on April 6 for White City residents.

The effort is part of the national Sound the Alarm campaign, which has installed approximately 40,000 smoke alarms in Oregon and Southwest Washington, according to a Red Cross news release. Smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years.

Red Cross volunteers and Fire District 3 employees will install the smoke alarms during 20-minute home visits, which will include sharing information about how to stop a fire and how to create an escape plan. The installations will occur between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

While the installations focus on White City, residents in Medford and other Rogue Valley cities can sign up to get a free smoke alarm — it just might not be installed on April 6.

Rebecca Marshall, communications director for Red Cross Cascades, urged White City residents not to hesitate to set up an installation appointment.

“We know that smoke alarms can cut the risk of deaths by half,” Marshall said. “We know that people only have about two minutes to escape a fire from their home if it does break out. … The bottom line is, smoke alarms are your best line of defense to get out of a fire.”

Residents can log on to SoundtheAlarm.org/Cascades to schedule an appointment for a free installation.
