Turkeys are plentiful this season, according to an agency news release. Seasons are long and the gear is simple.

Youth who have completed hunter education can also hunt a special youth-only spring season April 13-14.

Youth ages 8 to 17 are eligible to attend the hunting clinics and must be accompanied by an adult. Hunter education certification is not required.

Participants will learn about turkey biology, identification, behavior, sign identification, scouting techniques, hunting tactics, gear and decoys.

Cost is $10 and includes lunch and all needed equipment.

Learn about mushrooms, hunting them

Learn about mushrooms from mycologist Michael Amaranthus from 7-8 p.m. on April 8 at Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St. in Ashland. He will discuss spring fruiting mushrooms in Southern Oregon.

Amaranthus recently published “Fry, Thrive or Die”, a pocket guide to western U.S. mushrooms. The guide and the talk will prepare folks to hunt and serve wild mushrooms. There will be stories, history, recipes and more.

In the guide, each species is identified with a detailed color picture, distinct features and information on habitat, fruiting timing, edibility, creative uses and dangerous lookalikes. The talk will highlight must-know species in our area.

The talk is suitable for beginning foragers, as well as experienced mushroom hunters who seek new information on mushroom medicines, hallucinogens, toxins, innovative applications and edibility.
