Despite winning six individual events and both relays, the North Medford boys track and field team could not outmatch Grants Pass during Wednesday night’s Southwest Conference clash at Mel Ingram Field.

The Black Tornado boys dropped a 79-66 decision to the Cavemen but Matthew Donovan used a personal record of 23.02 seconds to win the 200-meter race and Antonio Martinez complemented that with a win in the 100 at 11.40.

The pair were part of the victory in the 4×100 relay, with Grants Pass being disqualified before Donovan also helped Owen Neely, Alec Winters and Jacob Casale take the 4×400 relay in 3:31.14.

North Medford showed off its speed in the distance races with Elijah Zavala staging a personal best 4:21.96 in the 1,500, Logan Huffman running a 9:55.79 to take the 3,000 and Winters fending off Grants Pass senior Jaia Hannagan to win the 800 at 2:03.07.

Houston Klug continued his strong season in the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 6 inches to place first for the third time on the season.

On the girls side, North Medford freshman Lily Zavala led the charge despite a 91-54 loss by posting a personal best of 5:39.19 to take the 1,500.

Paije Carpenter also won the triple jump with a distance of 32-5.5 and helped Olivia Boger, Claire Holcomb and McKenna Donovan take the 4×100 relay with a time of 50.47.

McKenna Donovan also posted a season-best 12.71 to win the 100.
