Community Works, a local nonprofit focused on helping victims of sexual and domestic violence, will launch a Medford event intended to help people know how to respond when they see signs of abuse.

“Start by Believing” will feature a panel of experts that includes a lead county prosecutor and the executive director of a local child abuse intervention organization. The event is from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Smullin Health Education Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road.

The event seeks to raise awareness and educate the public on how to respond to survivors of abuse. It coincides with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month and National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, according to a release from Community Works. The event’s name is linked to a global campaign by End Violence Against Women International, and the release describes plans for it to become a yearly event.

Experts slated to speak at the event include Patrick Green, Jackson County chief deputy district attorney; Tammi Pitzen, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center in Medford; and Medford police Officer Michael Kissee, who specializes in domestic violence cases.

The event is free and open to to the public, but seating is limited. For more information, see community-works.org/start-by-believing. To register, email emcewen@community-works.org or call 541-779-2393.
