PREP TRACK: Crater girls run the show at Newland Classic

Claire Davenport had her fingerprints in four of Crater’s 10 victories in the track events during Friday’s 24th Bob Newland Classic, helping boost the Comets to a whopping 201 points for a runaway win at South Medford High.

The Crater girls won 12 events overall to highlight action in the annual meet specially created for freshman and sophomore athletes to gain their time in the spotlight.

Davenport won the 200-meter run in 27.27 seconds and also earned a tiebreaker win over North Medford’s Peyton Caster in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches. The sophomore was also a part of both relay victories for Crater.

Cadence Doddington, Sarah Doddington, Kamdyn Johnson joined Claire Davenport to take the 4×100 (51.03), and then Reese Garnica and Grace Havniear tagged in with Johnson and Davenport to take the 4×400 in 4:21.31.

Johnson also won the 400 in 1:01.81 and Brynn Davenport ran away with a victory in the Custance mile in 5:32.92.

Chloe Borchard was a dual winner for the Comets after winning the 300 hurdles (50.24) and triple jump (32-6.75).

Also placing first for Crater were Haddie Barsalou in the 3,000 (11:01.24), Lila Higginson in the 100 hurdles (18.29), Sarah Doddington in the 100 (13.10) and Garnica in the 800 (2:23.73).

North Medford saw Kristina Atonio double up with a win in the discus at 101-5 and the shot put at 31-4.

Becca Krebs placed first for South Medford in the javelin with a throw of 101-11.

On the boys side, South Medford won with a combined score of 130 points — beating second-place Henley (120).

The Panthers had only two individual first-place efforts with Joseph Clevenger reaching 6-2 to take the high jump and Cade Siewert jumping 41-9.5 to win the triple jump.

Siewert also joined Nicholas Empasis, Gavin Ernst and Samuel Huxtable to win the 4×100 relay (45.38).

Crater came in third with 110 points and landed six individual victories, highlighted by Nathan Lindbloom handily winning the pole vault (11-0) and Hunter Verstegen throwing 40-4.5 for first place in the shot put.

The Comets also showed off their speed with four track victories, with Maxwell Miracle leading the way in the 800 with a personal best of 1:59.25.

Also winning for Crater were Jack Nickerson in the 400 (55.43), William Shore in the Custance mile (4:47.66) and Royal Linthorst in the 3,000 (9:38.69).

Caleb Scaglione swept the sprints for Cascade Christian to take fifth in team standings with 64 points. The sophomore won the 100 in 11.68 and the 200 in 23.90.

Scaglione teamed with Alexander Fiannaca, Isaac Young and Ashton Pickrel to win the 4×400 with a mark of 3:39.91.

Fiannaca also won the javelin with a throw of 163-2 for the Challengers.

Freshman Joel Kiene was first in the discus for St. Mary’s (128-0) and runner-up in the shot put (39-9.5).

YREKA INVITATIONAL: At Yreka, Calif., Emma Johnston helped propel the St. Mary’s girls team to a second-place finish behind Yreka after the senior jumped 15-7 to win the long jump and won the triple jump (34-6.5).

Marren Tignini won the 400 for the Crusaders (1:05.56).

On the boys side, Indiana Olson swept the sprints with victories in the 200 (23.05) and the 100 (11.38) for St. Mary’s.
