Jackson County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating what is being termed a suspicious death after human skeletal remains were discovered Sunday in a remote, forested location in the Jacksonville-Applegate area.

Detectives and medical examiners went to the scene, located in rugged terrain that required the assistance of search and rescue personnel to recover the remains, according to a news release issued Wednesday afternoon by the department. The exact location is not being released.

“Investigators are working to identify the subject and the cause and manner of death,” according to the statement. “Due to the advanced stages of decomposition, state medical examiners will conduct additional testing.”
