- North Medford's Dominic Daffron makes a play on the ball for an out against South Eugene during the second inning in Medford Tuesday.
North Medford and Roseburg each struck for a pair of relatively early runs and then it became a battle of who would blink first during Tuesday’s Southwest Conference baseball game at Champion Car Wash Field in Roseburg.
When all was said and done, the Black Tornado was able to mount 17 hits but still came up short on the scoreboard in a 4-3 setback.
In the fateful 10th inning, North Medford (10-5, 4-4 SWC) finally was able to gain the upper-hand when Ben Morgan singled up the middle to bring up the top of the lineup. After Frankie Rutigliano advanced on an error off the glove of third baseman Jake Johnson, Morgan was able to move to third base when Easton Curtis dropped down a bunt and reached safely to load the bases.
Then came a bit of craziness.
North Medford senior Jeremiah Robbins into foul territory to the right side of the ballpark that was tracked down by second baseman Kaden Austin for an out that was still deep enough for Morgan to tag up and score the go-ahead run.
Rutigliano jabbed at advancing toward third base as the throw came home to the catcher but soon retreated, while Curtis was caught a little too far off the bag after tagging from first base and got caught up in a rundown between first and second base.
Curtis was eventually tagged out on a running and diving effort by shortstop Breven Harrison before the Tornado junior could get back to the bag for the second out as Rutigliano now was charging home to try and score.
Harrison and Curtis were somewhat tangled as the Roseburg player tried to get up and couldn’t make a throw home against Rutigliano. After a gathering of the umpires, offensive interference was called to negate the run scored by Rutigliano and send him back to third base.
Then, following yet another umpire gathering, Rutigliano was deemed to be the third out of the play on the offensive interference call to end the inning for Roseburg (10-7, 6-3).
With Dominic Daffron still on the mound for the Black Tornado, Heath King was able to get his first hit off the right-hander with a leadoff single in the bottom of the 10th and then, after one out, Paxton Burke was able to reach on a chopper and ensuing error to put runners at second and third base for the Indians.
After intentionally walking Dane St. Clair to set up a force play, Jake Johnson came through with his first hit off Daffron for a slicing two-run double into the right field corner for a walk-off win.
Daffron pitched 9 ⅓ innings and allowed nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk, and also went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Tornado.
Kellen Willer was 3-for-5 and Morgan was 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI for North.
