- North Medford's Houston Klug, shown earliert his season, cleared 6 feet, 8 inches to win the high jump event at the Oregon Relays in Eugene Saturday.
Houston Klug added a special victory on Saturday afternoon in his very short time competing in track and field.
The senior captured the high jump title at the Oregon Relays with a height of 6 feet, 8 inches to earn his first victory at Hayward Field.
Klug joined the fray later in the competition to clear 6-4 on his first try and moved past 6-6 on his second attempt. After clearing 6-8, however, he couldn’t extend his Oregon-best lead to 6-10.25 and surpass the North Medford school record of 6-10.
Joseph Clevenger of South Medford reached 6-2 in the high jump to be deadlocked in a four-way tie for eighth place — with Grants Pass’ Jayden Jessee, Brevin Binder of Mountain View of Idaho and Summit’s Noah Goodrich.
Comets senior Caleb Doddington placed fourth in the 800-meter race at 1 minute, 54.94 seconds to earn the fourth-fastest time in the distance statewide.
Crater also saw the quartet of Parker Allen, Gabriel Grant, Reese Tiffee and Nicholas Kube place eighth in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:36.68.
Josiah Tostenson also had the special opportunity to represent Crater, toeing the line with professionals in the men’s one-mile run. Tostenson finished with a time of 4:07.63 to place 13th in a field of 15.
And in the unusual race of 1,000 meters, Crater saw Maxwell Miracle place third at 2:33.67 to lead a trio of Comets. Jeffrey Hellmann, who recently committed to run at Washington State, clocked 2:34.54 for fourth place and Ivar Hokanson came in at 2:35.58 for fifth.
Crater swept the next three spots as well with Jack Sandlin in sixth (2:37.12), Nathan Goode at seventh (2:40.22) and William Shore placing eighth (2:41.32).
For the girls, Crater saw some more success in the sprint medley relay with another eighth-place finish. Cadence Doddington, Sarah Doddington, Claire Davenport and Kamdyn Johnson combined to earn a mark of 1:54.55.
PHOENIX INVITATIONAL: At Phoenix, Brayden Decker was knocking on the door last week to take the Phoenix school record in the high jump after tying it. Now, he owns the distinction outright by reaching a height of 6 feet, 6 inches at the third annual Phoenix Invitational.
The junior used his personal record jump to extend his lead in the event on the Class 4A leaderboard — tied for the second-highest overall in Oregon — to power the Pirates to victory in the boys standings with a score of 105.
Kael Feeley also won the 1,500 with a PR of 4:06.22 seconds.
Feeley also joined Robin Trenbeath, Ethan Dobbins, William Pyeatt to capture the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:43.32.
Cash Stallsworth won with a throw of 138-9 in the discus, edging out Diego Salas at 137-6.
Eagle Point saw two first-place efforts in the field with Easton Raber taking the pole vault at 13-6 and Eagles sophomore Kadin Anthony posting a throw of 43-7 to win the shot put.
On the girls side, Addi Dippel cranked out a time of 13.03 to take the 100 for Crater and lead it to a third-place finish in the team scores at 70 points — trailing only Klamath Union (88.5) and Hidden Valley (81).
Phoenix’s Laurelin Jansen won the pole vault (8-9) and freshman Etta Allen won the discus (95-6).
Thianna Deng-Gomez of Eagle Point produced another PR to win the shot put (38-6).
