Four local high school students were named as winners of the Medford Rogue Rotary Club’s annual Four-Way Test speech contest in April.

Madelena Batista of South Medford High School took first place in the competition, according to a release issued by the local Rotary club. Gavin Guyette of St. Mary’s School placed second, Brooklyn Eubank of South Medford High School placed third and Josie North of South Medford High School placed fourth.

The Four-Way Test is a decision-making code for business ethics and relationships that was developed in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor and was adopted by Rotary International in 1943.

The test asks four questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it benefit all concerned?

The speech contest is designed to introduce high schoolers to Rotary and the Four-Way Test with friendly competition and a total of $575 in prize money divided amongst the four winners.

After taking first place in the contest, Batista will participate in the District Speech Contest May 4 in Coos Bay where a total of $7,000 will be divided among the top three speech givers.
