Martinez hits stride to propel North boys

A final home track and field meet means the last chance to leave a statement in your own stomping grounds, and it was something that North Medford’s Tony Martinez didn’t let pass him by with strong performances on Wednesday afternoon.

Martinez won three events by sweeping the sprints and anchoring the 4×100-meter relay to lead the Black Tornado boys to a 90-54 dual meet victory over South Medford at Bowerman Field.

The short relay was a tight one with Martinez barely closing in the final meters to take the win to finish with a combined time of 45.22 seconds after taking over for teammates Omar Gonzalez, Matthew Donovan and Jacob Casale.

“I remember seeing him 10, 15 yards ahead of me,” Martinez said about the 4×100 against South freshman anchor Dallin Neville, “I was like, ‘Oh, I gotta go.’ And so I just thought, ‘No, I can’t lose. That’s not an option here.’”

The senior reeling in the come-from-behind victory gave him the confidence to go on and seize the 100 meters in 11.23 seconds and get an elusive season record in the 200 at 22.63.

With his sprints slowly coming into form, Martinez hopes to qualify for the first time to the 6A state championships as an individual and take some titles at the Southwest Conference championship meet that is just two weeks away.

“I’m just preparing for that,” he said of the SWC finale. “I didn’t come into this meet expecting much and I’m more just excited for districts, I definitely want to finish off with some district titles.”

Martinez has been working diligently throughout the season to give himself ideal fitness and positioning for the meet.

“He didn’t miss a winter workout,” said North Medford track and field coach Piet Voskes. “That epitomizes who Tony is and his senior goals. Sometimes the clock is ticking for a senior and they realize they don’t have many opportunities left.”

“He is in that kind of mindset right now that he wants to maximize every effort,” he added. “And his opportunity to get to state is here and it’s time for him to capitalize on it.”

Houston Klug continued his win streak for the Black Tornado in the high jump with a height of 6 foot, 8 inches — the same mark he cleared to win at last week’s Oregon Relays in Eugene.

Black Tornado freshman Brody George went 18-6 to win the long jump, Connor Trinca won the shot put at 42-11 and Trey Kennedy-Coleman threw 135-10 to take the discus by three inches over Makani Manuwai.

On the track, North Medford showed its wheels in the distance races with Owen Neely getting a comfortable 800 victory (2:02.96), Elijah Zavala racing to a personal-best 4:17.54 in the 1,500 and Logan Huffman taking the 3,000 with a mark of 10:08.10.

Casale, Neely, Zavala and Alec Winters combined to win the 4×400 relay (3:33.37), while Dylan Vanderhoof ran 46.11 to win the 300 hurdles for the Black Tornado.

Devon Scott cleared a personal-best 14-0 in the pole vault to lead the South Medford boys.

Chadd Holtz registered 150-5 to win the javelin for the Panthers, while Cade Siewert went 41-11 to take the triple jump and Tanner Tuggle clocked in at 51.37 to take the 400.

The girls meet provided an opposite result, with South Medford running away with an 86-58 triumph over North Medford after claiming both relays and shining in the running events overall.

Bailie Leslie swept the sprints with a time of 13.83 in the 100 and 27.51 in the 200, and the junior joined forces with Raegan Burke, Alyana Van Horn and Hadley West to take the 4×100 relay at 53.07.

Burke and West were joined by Ana Krebs and Becca Krebs to take the 4×400 in 4:33.33, while West won the 400 (1:05.74) and Ana Krebs clocked 2:40.80 to win the 800.

Van Horn swept the hurdles events with a time of 16.65 in the 100 hurdles and 53.05 in the 300 hurdles.

The Panthers also got field victories from Edna Moala in the discus at a personal-best 104-9, while Becca Krebs tossed 106-7 in the javelin and Paige Schiffer cleared 5-0 to claim the high jump.

Olivia Boger recorded a PR of 17-0 to win the long jump for the Black Tornado and went 34-1 to take the triple jump.

North Medford freshman Lily Zavala also added two distance victories, running 5:18.71 in the 1,500 and 11:59.81 in the 3,000.

Abigail Khaleel went up 7-0 to win the pole vault for North Medford, and Kristina Atonio recorded 31-9 to place first in the shot put.
