- South Medford junior left-hander Tristan Mallari delivers a pitch during the first inning of Tuesday's game against Sheldon.
Needing a boost in the midst of a nine-game losing streak, South Medford’s baseball team got just that in the pitching performances of Jake Lewis and Tristan Mallari during Monday’s rescheduled doubleheader against South Eugene.
Lewis opened the day at Harry & David Field with a three-hit shutout, striking out six against only one walk in a 4-0 victory to halt the skid.
Mallari then brought the hammer down in the nightcap, fanning 11 with two walks and only one hit allowed in another complete-game effort that produced a 3-0 triumph.
Those efforts allowed South Medford (7-15, 4-11 SWC) to sweep the Southwest Conference series against South Eugene (10-14, 6-11), with shutouts posted in all three games by the Panthers.
South Medford will look to maintain momentum at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to North Medford (15-7, 9-6), which won the first two games in the series on April 13.
Lewis got all the offensive support he would need in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1, with Kaleb Long coming home on an RBI groundout by Chance Ryan.
The Panthers broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by RBI efforts from Cooper Mitchell and Gannen Jones.
In Game 2, Mallari helped his own cause with an RBI single to bring home Long after he had provided a two-out double in the bottom of the third inning.
Grady McQuillan tacked on an RBI single in the fourth inning to plate Mitchell and another RBI effort on a groundout to score Ryan.
