South Medford clinched a team spot in the Class 6A boys golf state championships with an eight-stroke victory over runner-up Sheldon and North Medford senior Andrew Plankenhorn secured a qualifying bid as an individual Monday at Bar Run Golf Course in Roseburg.

South Medford sophomore Jed Johnson led a solid group effort by the Panthers with a 71, with Tyler Snowden (77) and Blake Boutwell (78) not far off the pace and the team’s fourth scoring effort with pick-me 82s from Bodhi Hochendoner and Kyle Snowden.

Sheldon also advanced as a team by virtue of its second-place finish, with North Medford coming up short after placing third with a 330 to finish 14 shots back of the Irish.

Plankenhorn carded an 81 to edge out a tight pack of Black Tornado, with teammates Jace Gamby (82), Dallas Boekenoogen (83) and Sam Havens (84) on his heels.

Joining Plankenhorn as individuals qualifying for state were Tyler Popken of Roseburg (76) and Elijah Clendening of McNary (78).

3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 3 CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Eagle Point, St. Mary’s and Cascade Christian finished second and third, respectively, behind Bandon to each earn qualifying bids to the upcoming 3A/2A/1A boys golf state championships.

Davis Jones of St. Mary’s led the charge for the locals by placing eighth overall with a two-day total of 167 at Eagle Point Golf Club, while Jesse Burke finished ninth for Cascade Christian (175).

Also qualifying for state as individuals on non-qualifying teams were medalist Davis Hartwell of Crosspoint Christian, who posted a two-day total of 145, as well as Lucas Vanderlip of Brookings-Harbor (147) and Braedon Millhouser of Coquille (161).
