OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: Lithia Park walks, Bird Day, mushrooms and more

Lithia Park guided walks are being offered at 10 a.m. on Saturdays through September, according to the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission. Meet at the front entrance to the park, near the Plaza.

Experience the history, flora and fauna of Lithia Park in Ashland during a guided tour led by volunteers at 10 a.m. on Saturdays through September.

The free walks are 60-90 minutes and open to locals and visitors alike. Meet guides at the front entrance of Lithia Park across from the Plaza.

The walks have been offered since 1989 by the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission.

Nature center hosts Bird Day events

Rogue Valley Bird Day is set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at North Mountain Park Nature Center, 620 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland.

Activities include bird walks, education booths, children’s activities and more, including contests featuring bird calling and name-that-bird.

Search for wild mushrooms

Spend the day Saturday or June 2 searching for wild fungi and learning about edible and poisonous varieties of mushrooms with local expert Mike Potts.

Cost is $55, although children with an adult are free. Space is limited. Meet at the Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St., Ashland, and travel to the foraging location, a drive of about 45 minutes, and return by 3 p.m. Dress appropriately, bring a water bottle and lunch. Also bring a pocket knife, whistle and non-plastic collecting bag or basket.

Rogue River Cleanup Day is May 18

The 31st annual Rogue River Cleanup is set for 8 a.m. to noon May 18 west of Merlin. Volunteers should meet at the Hog Creek Boat Landing, 4719 Galice Road. An after-party is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. at Indian Mary Park, 7100 Galice Road. Registration is suggested to guarantee a spot.

Participating organizations include government agencies, conservation organizations and businesses operating in Josephine and Jackson counties.

Ways to help include riverside cleanup, roadside cleanup and weed-pulling. There’s also limited capacity to help with in-water cleanup using commercial rafts.

Meet at the Hog Creek Boat Landing parking lot. End the day with an after-party with live music, raffle and informational booths.

ScienceWorks hosts wildland fire event

ScienceWorks is hosting a Wildfire Education Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at its museum, 1500 E. Main St. in Ashland. Museum admission is free for the day.

The event is presented by the Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative.

Phoenix celebration reset for May 19

The Firebrand Resiliency Collective will host a rescheduled community event intended to welcome spring and encourage fire safety 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 at Phoenix Industrial Studios, 4495 S. Pacific Highway in Phoenix. Rainy, cold weather last weekend postponed the event.

The celebration will feature live music, food trucks, education booths and children’s activities. There will be arts and crafts, Smokey Bear, a fire engine and tree planting.

An organized 8-mile bicycle ride to the event via the Bear Creek Greenway is set for 11 a.m. from Ashland’s dog park on Briggs Lane.

Parking is available at Phoenix Elementary School, Umpqua Bank and Indigo Creek Outfitters in Phoenix, with a trolley arriving every 20 minutes to take visitors to the event site.

Learn about nature journaling

Learn about nature journaling 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Oredson-Todd Woods, off Lupine Drive near Ashland, in an event offered by Southern Oregon Land Conservancy.

Use words, pictures and numbers to describe observations. Bring a notebook or journal and a pencil and portable camp chair if desired.

The conservancy also invites visitors to take a stroll through Whetstone Savanna Preserve near White City, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 14.

Rodeo is May 16-18 at The Expo

The annual Central Point Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo is set for May 16, 17 and 18 at the Jackson County Expo. Doors open at 6 p.m. and events start at 7 p.m. Events include riding and roping. There will be food trucks and merchant booths. Tickets are $20 to $35, at TheExpo.com.

May 16 is Bi-Mart Kids Night, when kids 12 and under get in free with free tickets available at Bi-Mart; May 17 is First Responders Tribute Night and May 18 is Patriot Night, honoring members of the military.

Hike to tunnel dug by Chinese workers

Join the Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Bureau of Land Management and Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology for a guided history hike at the Buck Rock Tunnel on May 18.

Meet at 9 a.m. at the Rite Aid parking lot at 2341 Ashland St. in Ashland to carpool to the site. The hike is moderately strenuous and about 4 miles round-trip.

SOU’s Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project has spent years investigating Buck Rock Tunnel, the original Oregon and California Railroad route through the Siskiyou Mountains. The tunnel and surrounding railroad grade were under construction in 1883 and 1884 by Chinese railroad workers.

BLM and SOU archaeologists will provide updates on project findings, historical maps and artifacts.
