North Medford stood out in the field events with three district titles captured on the first day of the Southwest Conference track and field championships Wednesday in Roseburg.

Kristina Atonio had a strong performance for the Black Tornado, unwinding a personal-best throw of 33 feet, 7.75 inches on her sixth and final effort to win the girls shot put title.

Atonio will head to the state championships next week for the first time after placing fifth in last year’s SWC championships in the shot put.

Olivia Boger also won a district title in the long jump with a leap of 17-6 for North Medford. The junior got the PR on her final attempt to punch her ticket to Hayward Field.

North Medford will also send Paije Carpenter up to Eugene after she threw 116-10 in the javelin for second place.

Carpenter and Boger will both compete in the triple jump on Saturday to close out the district meet as the favorites in the event.

With only five finals on Day 1, Grants Pass took control in the girls team standings with 66.5 points and North Medford is in second place with 48.

On the boys side, Sheldon took three events to help total 59 points, landing ahead of Grants Pass (43) and North Medford (40).

North Medford’s Connor Trinca posted a PR of 49-2.5 to take the shot put title and will go to state for the first time to finish out his senior year.

The Black Tornado also saw Teagan Neron post a timely best of 162-11 to place second in the javelin and also qualify for state.

Devon Scott was South Medford’s lone state qualifier on Day 1 after a second-place finish in the pole vault.

The Panthers junior tied with Grants Pass’ Matthew Jenson at 13-2.25. However, Jenson was awarded first place due to tiebreakers after the GP senior cleared the height on his first attempt and Scott got it on his second.
