Locally shot film ‘Above the Trees’ to premiere in Ashland

- Rogue Valley musician Danielle Kelly plays Coral Quinn in the movie "Above the Trees," which was filmed in Southern Oregon. The film premieres at the Varsity Theatre Friday in Ashland and will be regularly shown at the downtown Ashland theater through Thursday.
A drama filmed on location in the Rogue Valley with local talent will premiere Friday night in Ashland and will be screened throughout next week at select theaters across Southern Oregon.
“Above the Trees,” starring local musician Danielle Kelly in an ensemble cast that includes Luis Rodriguez and several Oregon Shakespeare Festival actors, will premiere at 7:30 p.m. at the Varsity Theatre in Ashland. The premiere is sold out.
The film tells the story of a man rendered comatose by an attack, his boxer best friend charged with the crime and an unfolding Jackson County criminal trial, and “a mosaic of people linked to the tragedy,” according to a synopsis provided by Joma Films.
Kelly plays a DJ who is in love with the attack victim and becomes a potential star witness in the trial, according to a Joma Films press release issued Friday. The film is directed by Gary Lundgren, who has previously directed local film productions that include “Phoenix, Oregon” in 2019 and “Redwood Highway” in 2013.
The film will be shown regularly at the Varsity Theatre this weekend and throughout next week. Showings are 12:30, 4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 4 and 7:30 p.m. weekdays through Thursday, May 16.
Filmmakers will be at a showing 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Pelican Cinemas in Klamath Falls and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 12, for the showing at Southgate Cinemas in Grants Pass.
The film is showing in Grants Pass at 12:30, 4 and 7:30 p.m. daily through Thursday. The film also has run dates scheduled into next month in Eugene, Salem, Lincoln City, Florence, Corvallis, Portland and during GlowFest at Fort Jones, California.
The film has a runtime of 2 hours, 12 minutes and is not rated, according to the Varsity Theatre website.
