Crater boys finish runner-up in 5A state meet

EUGENE — All of Hayward Field heard an unexpected boom of applause and cheers from the bottom of section 117 early Saturday afternoon at the Class 5A track and field state championships.

It was the Crater faithful rejoicing in sudden excitement after Nathan Lindbloom unleashed a personal-best throw of 171 feet, 4 inches — 2 feet shy of tying the school record — on his final attempt to shock his way to the boys javelin state title.

The sophomore entered the event with the lowest entry mark (147-6) and was in fifth place after his fourth attempt.

To make the victory seem even more improbable, Lindbloom has been dealing with a UCL injury in his right arm that has limited his availability.

With expectations to simply finish among the top-five throwers after a scratch on his fifth attempt, the Comet started a clap to engage the crowd before being in disbelief over his event-winning throw.

“I thought I was gonna scratch to be honest,” Lindbloom said. “But I saw the throw and I’m just like, ‘Holy cow, that was crazy.’ I couldn’t even feel my throw, my arm was numb. It was crazy.”

Lindbloom earned a PR by a little over 5 feet, a far cry from winning the Crater Classic at 166-0 back in March.

After he was diagnosed with the injury, Lindbloom diligently continued to workout while he was sidelined to keep up his strength.

“It was serious work with my physical therapist,” he said. “He gave me some workouts to strengthen everywhere else except for the UCL, so I guess it works.”

Crater track and field coach Justin Loftus was nothing short of impressed by the sophomore’s big day.

“Incredible, he’s been hurt pretty much all season,” Loftus said. “We didn’t even know if he was gonna throw today, but he came out today and popped one.”

“He’s got a huge future,” added the coach. “He’s already talking about the future and what he can do when he gets healthy. That’s a big thing for him.”

Health will be important as Lindbloom will be out until August, and he is looking forward to prove he isn’t a “one and done” state champion.

“The guys on the team called me the ‘One Hit Wonder,’” Lindbloom said with a laugh. “I have to get out there to get another state title.”

Lindbloom’s effort may have been the most improbable result for Crater but he certainly wasn’t alone, with the Comets keeping the foot on the pedal to finish second-only to Summit in the boys team standings.

Crater finished with 72 points, while Summit posted an impressive 106 to claim the 5A championship.

Josiah Tostenson added a third state title to his resume for the Comets, clocking a winning time of 3 minutes, 50.92 seconds in the 1,500-meter race to complete the junior’s sweep of the distance races.

Tostenson seized the 3,000 (8:12.94) Friday morning, and became the first Crater runner to win both races since Andy Monroe did it in 2016.

“I always wanted to complete the double, so I’m super amped,” said Tostenson. “I couldn’t be happier with the way I’m ending my season. It’s crazy thinking about all the incredible runners we’ve had since Andy, so it makes me super proud of myself.”

Tayvon Kitchen placed third in the 1,500 (3:56.46), while Caleb Doddington was fifth in the 800 (1:55.54) and teammate Jeffrey Hellmann finished eighth (1:58.28).

Tostenson, Doddington, Hellmann and Nicholas Kube combined to produce a bronze medal in the 4×400 relay (3:27.26).

Reese Tiffee recorded two PRs en route to a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 100 (11.06) and the 200 (22.21), while Parker Allen put together a third-place effort at 21-4.25 in the long jump for the Comets.

Eagle Point junior Thianna Deng-Gomez capped a strong season that saw her win eight meets in the girls shot put by placing second Saturday at 38-7.75 in the event.

The Crater girls had podium appearances in both relays, with Addison Dippel, Sarah Doddington, Kamdyn Johnson and Claire Davenport posting their best time this season to place second (49.74) in the 4×100.

Johnson and Davenport joined Emma West and Reese Garnica to finish eighth (4:05.97) in the 4×400.

West also placed sixth (4:41.59) in the 1,500.

Caden Negra and Cole Beneventi led the Ashland boys on Day 2, with Beneventi placing seventh (50.62) in the 400 and eighth (22.57) in the 200 and Negra finishing sixth (50.08) in the 400.

The duo were joined by Gavin White and Theodore Williams to finish eighth in the 4×100 relay (43.32).
