- Rich Rosenthal, Medford parks and recreation director, shows that the material used for a splash pad is the same used for the replacement flooring at Rogue X in Medford.
The Rogue Credit Union Community Complex, better known as Rogue X, is currently undergoing a floor remodel following multiple slips and safety concerns due to the facility’s original flooring in its changing rooms and party rooms
Contracting with Medford-based floor refinishing company Cap Concrete Coatings, the city of Medford will spend approximately $75,000 for the renovation, according to Rich Rosenthal, the Medford parks and recreation director.
“There have been some slips, and as we’ve operated the facility … there were things that needed to be adjusted, and this was one of those things to take a look at,” Rosenthal said.
Cap Concrete Coatings’ product will be installed in five rooms: the men’s, women’s and family changing rooms, as well as rooms 104 and 106, known as party rooms, he said.
Staff are expecting the floor remodel to wrap up by Friday.
Rogue X staff scheduled the renovations to occur overnight to avoid impacting facility visitors as much as possible.
“We did relocate some (party room) rentals to other areas in the building, which is really a fairly minor inconvenience and only impacts a handful of rentals, and it was conducted in a way that has been minimal on impact to customers and revenues,” Rosenthal said. “Our peak times for the first six months have been weekends, so we’re trying to avoid peak times, and school’s now out this week.”
The construction and finishing touches at Rogue X won’t end at the floor renovations.
“The Rogue X project technically isn’t complete yet,” Rosenthal said. “What’s left in the construction project is the bike and pedestrian bridge to the east of Rogue X and the Wes Howard Memorial Sports Park.”
The bridge is scheduled to be installed by July 21, he said.
Another planned project for Rogue X is to install an electric message board facing the Rossanley Drive and North Ross Lane intersection northeast of the facility, though planners are awaiting the go-ahead from the city of Medford to start on the sign.
“The City Council is considering modifying the municipal code to allow us to install that type of sign,” Rosenthal said, adding that the sign would be 10 feet by 12 feet.
Regardless of flooring complications, the parks and recreation director lauded the project’s success after opening to the public in January following years of planning and construction efforts.
“We’re not even six months in, and I think … between weekend events and recreational swims, that facility has easily had 200,000 people come through already,” Rosenthal said. “From a recreation and organizational perspective, Rogue X has been a spectacular success.”
