- Medford Mustangs first baseman Kellen Willer went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs in Game 1 against Grants Pass Friday night.
For the second time in June, the Medford Mustangs swept another doubleheader against the Grants Pass Nuggets with an initial 11-3 victory and a well-earned 5-2 win in the nightcap Friday night at Agnew-Lytle Field in Grants Pass.
In the first game, the Mustangs (12-3-2) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning and didn’t look back.
It started with Kellen Willer driving an RBI double to left field and Jimmy Morgan adding a two-run single to put Medford in position to get its fourth double-digit score of the year.
Medford racked up two runs in each of the next four innings to total 11 runs on 11 hits, with Willer batting 2-for-3 for two doubles along with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Morgan finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Triston Wallace went 2-for-4 for two runs and two RBIs and Eli Havey had a double.
Freeman Rountree had a strong game on the mound, registering five hits on three strikeouts over six innings.
In the nightcap, scoring was more tame before some late-game hits in the seventh inning broke a 2-all tie to ensure a Mustangs victory.
Kyle Cope bounced a one-run bunt into the infield to bring Mallari in for the go-ahead run and moved Dominic Daffron to third before stealing second base.
It put the pieces in place for Jackson Rosenthal to smack a single to center field for two insurance runs and seal the 5-2 score.
Rosenthal also scored a run in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Havey and Cope had a one-run single in the fifth inning.
Cope batted 2-for-3 for two RBIs and a run, while Rosenthal hit 2-for-4 for two RBIs and a run.
Medford will play another twin bill with Grants Pass at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at North Medford High and will have the chance to take all six games against the Nuggets — the final four games counting toward the Area 4 standings.

LINCOLN POTTERS 6, MEDFORD ROGUES 5: At Lincoln, Calif., the law of averages weren’t on the Medford Rogues’ side as it couldn’t complete a comeback in a fourth straight loss to open Pacific Empire League play Friday night.
The Rogues (10-8) are still searching for their first road win of the season and it seemed likely after it held an 11-5 hit advantage and held the Potters (19-2) scoreless for the final four innings in a game that had both teams commit only one error each.
However, Medford left 10 runners on the base and couldn’t take advantage with two runners left in the top of the seventh and Langan Naylor in scoring position in the top of the eighth.
Levi Jones had a strong game for the Rogues with two doubles, one run and one RBI. Naylor had an RBI double in the top of the eighth and Tyler Horner batted 3-for-5 for one RBI and one run.
Jack Meissner and Cody Ferrante each added an RBI for the Rogues, while Meissner, Jack Peterson and Luke Smith also each scored a run.
The Rogues pitching also had a strong game with starting pitcher Zachary Slayden putting up three strikeouts, three hits and three runs and Hayden Van Acker had two strikeout along with three runs on two hits.
Brandon Gomez didn’t allow a hit in the final two innings and struck out three Potters batters.
Medford will play Lincoln two more times on the road with a game on Saturday and the third on Sunday to close out the series.
