- Medford Rogues relief pitcher Brandon Gomez delivers a strike during Friday's game against the Lincoln Potters.
It took Medford a little longer than it would have hoped but the Rogues were finally able to break through for their first win in the Pacific Empire League with an 11-6 road triumph Sunday over the Lincoln Potters.
The win allowed Medford (11-9, 1-5 PEL) to snap a five-game losing streak that coincided with its first road trip of the collegiate wood-bat summer season.
After suffering a pair of narrow losses against Lincoln (20-3) in the first two games of the series in California, 6-5 on Friday and 9-8 in 12 innings Saturday, the Rogues scored early and often to keep the pressure on and eventually withstand a late comeback bid by the Potters.
Consecutive singles by Jack Meissner and Ian Fernandez set the table for Tyce Peterson to come through with a two-out, two-run single in the first inning to create some hopeful spirits in the Medford dugout.
The Rogues led 3-2 through three innings and were able to create a cushion that held true to the end with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth.
Liam Barrett and Jack Peterson each drew walks in the fourth inning and were brought home on a two-run single by Meissner, who came through again in the fifth with a two-run double after a pair of runs had scored on errors.
Meissner concluded his big day by going 3-for-5 with one run and four RBIs, while Levi Jones had a solo home run in the third inning and an RBI triple in the seventh.
A big lift on the mound for the Rogues came from the relief efforts of Hunter Grasser and Brock Cordes.
Grasser came on with a run in and no outs in the third inning and didn’t allow a hit in three shutout innings, striking out four with two walks. Cordes followed by allowing only one hit and one walk in two innings to help Medford settle in and take control against the Potters.
Saturday’s marathon game went so long it wound up being suspended and finished Sunday, with the teams standing tied 5-5 through nine innings and then answering each other’s scoring efforts until Lincoln was finally able to settle it with consecutive bases-loaded walks drawn by J.R. Freethy and Jacob Doyle.
Fernandez supplied a two-run home run in the second inning for Medford and finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Tyce Peterson added a solo homer in the fifth inning and Jones added a two-run double in the eighth inning to set the need for extra innings.
Medford returns for a three-game homestand beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday against the Healdsburg Prune Packers (16-0) at Harry & David Field.
