UPDATE: Cooling shelter opens in Ashland; Medford shelter extends to Monday

Cooling shelters are open in Ashland and Medford as temperatures in the Rogue Valley hit the triple digits.
High temperatures will rise above 100 degrees until at least Wednesday, with a possible record-shattering high of 113 in Medford on Saturday and 110 on Sunday, according to the local National Weather Service office. Monday’s high in Medford is predicted at 111 degrees, the NWS website said Saturday, with highs of 111 Monday, 108 Tuesday and 101 Wednesday.
Medford has opened a shelter at 324 W. 6th St., operated by ACCESS volunteers. Hours are now noon to 8 p.m. through Monday, July 8, city officials announced Saturday.
The shelter will provide water, restrooms, snacks and a cooling area and water for pets. People can come and go. Text MED4SHELTERS to 888777 to receive the latest information on shelter activations in Medford.
Ashland is activating a cooling center from noon to 7 p.m. through Sunday, July 7, at 2200 Ashland St. The cooling center may extend to Monday and Tuesday, depending on the heat wave and volunteer availability to staff the shelter, city officials said Tuesday. The Salvation Army in Medford also is providing temporary drop-in cooling shelters at 304 Beatty St. and 922 N. Central Ave. Water and snacks will be available.
