PITTSBURGH — Two attendees who were shot at former president Donald Trump’s rally were upgraded from critical to serious condition as of 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for Allegheny Health Network.
James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon, and David Dutch, 57, of Plum, were both previously in critical condition at a Pittsburgh hospital. Trump was hit in the ear and Corey Comperatore, 50, died from his injuries and has been hailed as a hero for protecting his family.
Friends of Dutch and Copenhaver have also hailed them as heroes for their actions, as Thomas Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, tried to assassinate Trump at the campaign event in Butler County on Saturday.
Roger Milliron Jr., a friend who has known Dutch for 20 years, said the former Marine likely acted like any other would have in the face of gunshots.
“”Knowing him the way that I know him, he probably went into the reactionary move, like every good Marine,” Milliron said. “He probably hit the deck and knocked people down, trying to protect them.”
The family of Copenhaver thanked hospital staff, first responders, and others for their support.
“The Copenhaver family would like to thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers, and support as Jim and his family recover from this horrible, senseless, and unnecessary act of violence,” they wrote in a statement.
